She got to her feet and glared at him.

“Jealousy? You think I’m jealous of a crazy woman who can’t seem to let you go? I’m not jealous. I’m pissed.” She huffed. “You need to tell her to go and leave us alone and until then, I think we should just stop seeing each other. Maybe then you can decide what or who you want.”

“I know who I want and it’s not her! You should know that by now,” he shouted as he stood.

“How would I know? You’ve never said a word about how you feel—”

“Neither have you,” he snapped, then ran his fingers through his hair in frustration. “Addison, I don’t want her. I want you. Why would I be with you if I still wanted her?”

“Maybe you didn’t realize you still wanted her.”

“Bullshit. I’m a grown-ass man. I know what I want and don’t want.”

“I am not competing with any woman over any man. You deal with her and once she’s finally gone from your life, you come and see me, and we’ll see where we go from there.” She walked to the kitchen, and he heard the door open, and slam closed behind her.

“What the ever-loving fuck?” he muttered. “Women.”

He strode to the kitchen and opened the door, just in time to see her hightailing it down the driveway. He entered the house, slammed the door, and headed back to the living room. He stood in the center of the room with his hands on his hips, wondering where everything went wrong.

Monday morning, Cody entered the sheriff’s office, and strode to the counter. A woman in her late sixties, early seventies, sat behind it. She glanced up at him and frowned.

“Can I help you, young man?”

“I’d like to speak to Sam or a deputy, ma’am.”

“Sam is out, but Nevada is here.” She glanced at the hallway. “Nevada!” she yelled.

Cody saw an intercom on the counter but apparently, she didn’t like using it. He saw a deputy enter the lobby shaking his head.

“One day, you’ll learn how to use the intercom, Betty Lou,” he said.

“I know how to use it. I don’t like it. This man wants to talk to a deputy. It’s your lucky day.” She smirked.

Cody watched the deputy close his eyes, shake his head, and sigh, then he looked at him.

“Come with me.”

“Yes, sir.” Cody followed him back a hallway, but as he looked back at the woman, she was staring at him with a frown on her face. No doubt, she wondered what he wanted.

“Have a seat,” the deputy said. “I’m Deputy Nevada Shelton. How can I help you?”

Cody took a deep breath and explained the situation. He hated telling personal things to anyone, but the deputy needed to know what was going on.

“There’s a man with her, and twice, he’s been caught watching Addison.”

“What do you mean, caught?”

“Addison saw him twice, close to her shop, then he was in her pharmacy with Gwyn. I don’t like it.”

“Mr. Haines—”

“Cody.”

“Cody. Unless they do something, there isn’t anything I can do. All they’d have to say is they’re here as tourists. I know they’re not and you know they’re not, but we have no proof they’re here for you.”

“So, we wait until something happens?”

“Are you in fear for your life?”
