“Well, no, but Addison is scared.”

“I’m sure she is. I’ll go by her store and have her give me a description of the man. If I see him, I’ll question him, but other than that, I can’t do anything. I’m sorry.”

Cody huffed. “I understand.”

“The good thing is, we know about him and her, so if anything happens, we’ll be on it. I wish I could do more.”

Cody stood and put his hand out to him, and the deputy shook it.

“I appreciate your time, Deputy.”

“Yes, sir. It’s what we’re here for. I’ll stop in to see Addison at lunchtime.”

“Thank you. Have a good day.”

Cody left the office, strode past the desk, walked out, and headed out the front door. He hoped the deputy would do as he said and see Addison. In the meantime, he was going to look for Gwyn.

Chapter Eight

Every time the bell rang, Addison’s eyes would dart toward the door, hoping that man and woman wouldn’t come back. She had been feeling miserable all weekend, mad at herself for losing her temper. It wasn’t Cody’s fault.

When Deputy Nevada Shelton entered, she couldn’t help but admire how handsome he was. She whispered to Kinley about it and they both agreed that Courtney was a lucky woman. When he reached the counter, Addison greeted him with a smile and asked if there was something she could assist him with.

“No, ma’am. Actually, I was wondering if I could speak with you, Addison?” he responded politely. She was taken aback but quickly agreed. “Kinley, I’ll be right back. Nevada, if you could come around the counter, we can go to my office.”

He followed her to her office, and she motioned for him to take a seat while she sat behind her desk. He removed his hat and held it in his hands as he spoke.

“I want to ask you about the man you’ve seen lurking around here,” he said.

Surprised by how much information he already knew, Addison asked, “How did you find out?”

“Cody Haines stopped by the office this morning. We are not able to do anything unless that man actually does something wrong, but I want to know what he looks like so we can keep an eye out for him. I’ll also inform Sam and the other deputies,” he explained.

“Oh, okay. He’s about my height, maybe five eight. Dark hair peppered with gray, dark eyes and thin lips.” Addison shuddered as she recalled their encounters. “He gives me the creeps.”

Nevada’s grin widened. “If I could arrest someone for being creepy, I’d go find that guy right now. Did he say anything to you?”

“No. The first time I saw him, Noah walked me to my car and the man immediately left after Noah gave him a glare. Then the second time, Kinley asked him if he needed anything, and he said he was just enjoying his cigarette. Did Cody tell you that he came in here with a woman?”

“Yes,” Nevada confirmed. “He mentioned it. Addison, if you see him again, let me know. The tourists will be clearing out soon and if he sticks around, we might have some trouble on our hands. And Sam hates trouble in his county, so he’ll want to know about this too.”

“He didn’t say anything to Noah,” she said.

Nevada chuckled. “Hell, what sane man would?”

“True.” She grinned.

He stood up from his seat. “I’m going to take a walk to the diner and look around. If he shows up again or comes into the pharmacy, give me a call.” He handed her one of his business cards, then tipped his hat before leaving. “Have a good day.”

“Thank you, Nevada,” she said.

“Yes, ma’am.” He strode out of the door and left the pharmacy.

She made her way back behind the counter and began working on prescriptions. But couldn’t stop thinking about Cody. She shouldn’t have reacted the way she did Saturday.

“Are you alright?” Kinley asked as she approached her.

“Yeah,” Addison replied with a small smile. “Nevada said he was heading out for lunch and keeping an eye out for that guy.”
