She knocked forcefully on the door. It swung open and Gwyn looked shocked to see them, but quickly composed herself and grinned.

“What are you doing here?”

“As if you don’t already know.” Addison held up the photo and when Gwyn reached for it, she snatched it back.

“I told you I would get him back. He can’t stay away.” Gwyn shrugged confidently.

Addison couldn’t believe what she was hearing. Then she burst out laughing.

“You didn’t get him back. This is all just a setup.”

“You think so?” Gwyn smirked.

“I do. Look at his expression.” She gestured to his face. “He’s clearly surprised that you’re pulling this kind of stunt. I have no idea how you got that photo, unless your little lackey is lurking around just waiting for something to happen. But seriously, this is completely fake. You need to accept that you’ve lost. He doesn’t want you anymore, and that’s on you. Leave us alone.” Addison turned to Kinley. “Let’s get out of here. I can’t deal with this woman any longer.”

“Agreed. And she better never try anything with me either.” Kinley glared at Gwyn. “You’re one mentally unstable individual.”

After a few seconds of staring at Gwyn, they walked to their cars and drove away from the parking lot. Addison waved goodbye to Kinley as they parted ways and went home. Confronting Gwyn had taken a lot of courage, but she was exhausted from dealing with this woman who was determined to destroy whatever connection Cody and her had. Even though she wasn’t sure about Cody’s feelings toward her, she knew he didn’t want anything to do with Gwyn.

Addison was grateful that Kinley pointed out the flaws in the photo because she almost fell for it, and it could have ruined everything between her and Cody.

Chapter Nine

Cody strode purposefully from the barn and into the falling snow, his boots crunching on the icy ground. The thick flakes fell steadily, each one settling gently on his hat and coat. If this kept up, they wouldn’t make it to Hartland on Saturday night. He pulled out his phone to check the forecast and shook his head in dismay. A winter storm warning was in effect until tomorrow morning, and they were calling for up to a foot of snow.

He climbed the steps to the porch, pausing to kick off the snow from his boots before entering the warm house. The sudden change in temperature felt wonderful against his chilled skin. He glanced at the indoor/outdoor thermometer and saw that it was only ten degrees outside, likely colder with the windchill.

After hanging up his hat and coat, he headed straight for the living room where the fireplace stood. As he stood there watching the flames dance around the logs, creating crackling and popping sounds, his phone rang. With a smile, he answered to see Addison’s face lighting up the screen.

“Hey, darlin’. Are you still at the pharmacy? It’s getting pretty bad out there.”

“I’m on my way home now. We closed early due to the weather and I’m leaving Hartland as we speak,” she replied calmly.

“Hartland? What took you there?”

“I paid Gwyn a visit.”

“What? Why would you do that?” Cody asked in surprise.

“I’ll explain when I get home. I just wanted to let you know about work and that I’m heading home now.”

“But—” Cody started but Addison cut him off.

“I need to focus on driving right now, Cody. I’ll give you all the details once I’m home safe,” she reassured him.

“Okay, be careful,” Cody said worriedly.

“I will. Bye.” Addison disconnected the call.

Cody set his phone on the counter and shook his head. Why had Addison gone to see Gwyn? How did she even know what room she was in? He hoped she would be safe and sound but couldn’t help feeling anxious about her impromptu visit.

A knock sounded on the door. He quickly made his way to the door, peering out from behind the curtains to see Levi standing on the porch. Cody opened the door with a smile.

“Levi, come inside before you freeze.”

Levi nodded, stomped snow off his boots and stepped inside.

“I’m giving the men the rest of the day off. Wanted to keep you in the loop.”
