They all thought about that for a moment. “Well,” Kate said thoughtfully. “If what you say is true and we’re all in a book, then this writer…Giulia…she can just rewrite the story and bring them back.”
“And you’re willing to bank on that? What if that’s not what happens? What if…for some reason…the two parallel worlds collide and there’s no way to fix what we do? Are you willing to risk their lives?”
“I am,” Maggie piped up.
Everyone looked at her like she was a psycho. She had agreed a little too cheerily.
“What? I don’t see any of you pushing twelve kids out of your vagina.”
“It hasn’t been twelve,” Kate sighed.
“Well, it certainly feels like it. I’m losing count. That must mean that all this is some crazy dream. No woman would ever willingly put herself through that many pregnancies, or stay with a man who impregnates her with such deception.”
“I gotta agree with her on that one,” Claire nodded. “I didn’t even want kids, but then I let Derek talk me into giving up our amazing sex life for our little superheroes? I just don’t buy it.”
“At least you don’t have the most pathetic life ever,” Cara muttered. “While you’re all off living and having the time of your lives, I somehow can’t manage to leave the house without Sinner? I’m telling you right now, it has to be a lie because I feel like I could run away to the Caribbean with Dwayne Johnson right now and not feel one iota of fear.”
We all turned to Kate, wondering what she had to say. She shrugged. “Yeah, it’s unbelievable, but I wouldn’t give up Knight for the world. He’s amazing in bed.”
“You know, this all makes sense,” Maggie nodded. “Knight is this badass assassin, but he somehow let you get captured? I’m sorry, but that just doesn’t ring true with the man we all know.”
“He didn’t let me get captured,” Kate defended him. “He was trying to solve a mystery.”
“I gotta agree with Maggie,” I chimed in. “Knight would never let anything happen to you.”
“I disagree. Knight loves me so much. That’s what made the whole story so heartbreaking. He was so destroyed by what happened that he walked away from me. He couldn’t come to grips with the part he played in how I almost died. Frankly, it made me love him more. It made him…more human.”
“That’s true also,” Claire sighed, then her face paled. “Oh, God. Does this mean that Derek isn’t actually super skilled with knives? All those men he killed in the forest when we were on the run…it was all a lie?”
Crap, this was about to get messy.
“We won’t find out if we sit around here. Let’s go blow up a building.”
We left in a hurry, but honestly, the energy in the group dropped a good ten degrees. Of course, that tended to happen when everything you thought you knew turned out to be a lie.
We made it to the supply room with no interference, but if I knew the guys, it wouldn’t be long until they figured out where their wives were. I had my money on Knight being the first to show up.
“Man, I wish Hunter or Chance were here for this,” I grumbled as he gathered supplies.
“Why?” Cara asked curiously. “This is your chance to show them who you are.”
I winced, afraid to admit this. “I actually don’t know that much about explosives. I think that’s why Giulia stuck me in the IT room. There’s not much danger of me getting into trouble with a computer. Then again, I don’t actually know how to use a computer.”
“Seriously?” Maggie asked.
I held up my hand. “I’m a certifiable luddite.”
“So, all that computer jargon…” Claire said.
“Just what she writes for me. I don’t even know what a dark web is,” I admitted.
“You know, now that I think about it…I’m not sure I like Henry Cavill.”
“What does that have to do with anything?” Maggie retorted.
“Well, he plays Superman…Derek is Superman. Geez, people. Connect the dots!”
“So, what are we going to do?” I asked, a little worried that our plan was going to quickly unravel.
