“Calm down buddy, she’s gone. Long gone.” One of them laughed as he breathed in the lingering smell in the air.

“Is she safe?” I shook him and he suddenly looked at me concerned.

“She took off in an Omega cab, I’m sure she’s fine.” I needed to find her, help her.

“What did she look like?” My eyes must have been wild, crazy.

“I don’t know, man. She just caused a shit show at the Gritty Growl’s gig. From what I heard, no one in the bar noticed she was an omega at first. She apparently looks more like a beta.” I let him go and growled in frustration. I needed to call every hospital, and my pack, to let them know I found our true mate. We needed to find her immediately - as soon as they scented her they would know. They would understand. She is the one. I grabbed my phone to call when I saw a text from Aiden.

Omega Social Services just called. Piper had a flare-up and almost went into heat early, but they medicated her and it's under control. If she goes into heat again we need to be there for her. Declan and I are already signed up to help. You need to make a decision.

I growled as I saw his message. Who cared about Piper when our true mate was out there, in need? I called Aiden. He picked up on the first ring.

“Dominic!” Despite his voice being steady, I could tell he was stressed. “Piper almost went into heat. Luckily they were able to prevent it in time.” I clenched my jaw, trying to stay calm.

“Where is she now?”

“She was at the Omega House. They were able to medicate her, but it was a close call. Since we were the only pack courting her, they called us to be on backup for when she goes into heat. Dom, you have to make a decision. Can you be there for her? Declan and I have already agreed to prepare the nesting room.” I heard the desperation in his voice. Some small part of me was pleased that we were the only pack she was entertaining, but I quickly shook my head. What was I thinking? I had just found out I have a fated mate!

“Was she at the Omega House the whole time? Seems odd being around a bunch of other omegas would trigger her heat early.”

“Dom, seriously? We need you to give them an answer now!” I sighed, running my hand through my hair as the last tendrils of her scent were disappearing in the air.

“Aiden, I can’t.” I heard him huff in disbelief through the phone. “You don’t understand. Tonight I scented her. My mate. We have a fated mate, Aiden! She's out there! I never believed in it! In any other circumstance, I’d be all in to help you with an omega, but not now that I scented her.” Aiden’s breathing was hoarse through the line. I could already picture him squeezing the bridge of his nose in frustration.

“Dom, we have to help her!” I understood his frustration. He was feeling something for Piper that he hadn’t felt in years, perhaps something he thought he’d never feel again. I tried to calm him down, at least temporarily until I explained. “Let’s discuss it when I get home.” I knew this would cause strife in our pack. But they didn’t smell what I had. Our true scent match. Our mate.

Chapter 24

Piper

I woke up in a hospital bed yet again. I really hoped this wouldn’t become a pattern. Looking around, I groaned as I sat up. The cramps were gone, but I still felt sore from what happened last night. My body was exhausted from the anxiety of almost being thrown into heat around a bunch of creepy, pushy alphas. The worst part was remembering that I might not have been able to hold back from accepting them, despite knowing those men would not have cared about me or been gentle with me at all. I guess creeps existed in both universes. I scowled, hating this world and how it had changed my body. I couldn't even enjoy a show without being put in danger, all because of my “designation.”

“Ah! You’re up!” My doctor breezed in carrying a clipboard. “It was touch and go for a minute there. But we managed to keep your heat at bay. Not sure what triggered it. Care to share exactly what happened last night?” She sat on my bed, assessing me with a knowing look. I lowered my gaze.

“I was just… hanging out, thinking about my last few dates. Then I felt the cramps and smelled the scent. You know the rest.” She looked at me dubiously.

“Normally you would feel the heat coming on for at least several hours. You’re lucky we got you here in time. Strangely enough, the EMTs who first carried you in said you smelled of alphas. Any idea why that might be?” I blushed and looked away again.

“Nope. I mean, I was on a date with several members of Pack Archer recently.” She set the clipboard down and reached for my hand.

“Piper. I know you are still getting used to this world. But we are all trying our hardest to get you adjusted safely. Please respect us by doing the same. Being honest can help both you and us to get you through this safely.” I nodded, but felt the anger simmering in me. I finally have time to go and enjoy life, but now I was being restricted because of something I couldn’t control.

“The reason why we do this isn’t to cage you in. It’s for your safety and the safety of others around you. Alphas can go a bit wild from the scent of an omega in heat, and they aren’t always kind about it.” I crossed my arms and looked away.

“Anyway, your hormones are in check and you are free to leave today. Your body has almost fully transitioned - your scent glands and perfume have come in fully. I noted that your sense of smell has improved markedly since you first arrived. Your body should technically be able to take a knot, but since this has happened over the course of a few months I’d like to put off your heat for at least one more week to make sure everything is fully safe. And so you can arrange for an alpha to assist you through your heat. Have you anyone in mind? The only people Omega Social Services had on file was Pack Archer” My eyes flew back over to her at the mention of the pack. “We called them last night when you had your episode, and two of them agreed to step in if need be. But for now, I want you to focus on deciding if you want them for your heat. It’s coming soon, whether you want it to or not.”

“They said they would help me through the heat?” My heart skipped a beat. If I had to pick anyone, I’d pick them for this next part, even if it was just Aiden and Declan. We still had some issues to work out, but hearing that they would help me eased my anxiety a bit.

“Yes, and they are technically your emergency pack. In the meantime, take it easy and take your medicine. Worst case scenario, when your heat comes in you now have a pack to help you through it. I think you’ll be just fine.” She smiled at me and my heart skipped a beat. Everything might end up being okay.

Chapter 25

Declan

“Dom, please! Consider it!” I pleaded as my lover sat in the chair, flipping through the Omega Registry binder he had ordered. He was in a rush to find the omega he claimed was our fated mate. He came home looking like a madman last night, raving about a scent he picked up downtown that he was convinced was our mate. He had ordered scent books from all the local registries in an effort to find her. It couldn’t have come at a worse time. “Piper is going to need us, and soon!” He flipped through pages, scenting each one and giving a frustrated growl.

“She’s out there, Declan! You don’t understand!” I sighed and stood up to rub his shoulders as he grabbed another binder.
