“Look at these curves here. What do they remind you of?”

“Hm. They look kind of like a woman’s body – something about the swells there reminds me of hips, or breasts.”

“Very good. You’ll see the orange, pink and white I added here, for the lesbian flag.”

“I don’t understand what more you want from it. It’s perfect.”

“I want to give it more of a shimmery look – like a translucent layer on the top, to make it look kind of like it’s made of glass.”

“Why glass?”

“Glass is fragile and beautiful, just like the peace queer folks enjoy. It is too easily shattered by those who think their love is wrong.”

That was so touching, it nearly brought tears to Liv’s eyes. She was struck once again by the powerful urge to kiss Juliette. She stood up, drawn to her as though Juliette was a human-sized magnet and she was a hapless iron filing.

“You’re so talented,” Liv murmured. Her eyes flicked to Juliette’s lips without her permission. Desire was quickly outweighing rational thought. She looked back into Juliette’s eyes to see that Juliette’s gaze was fixed on Liv’s lips.

Liv leaned forward.

“Juliette? Liv? Are you in here?”

They jumped apart as though an electric pulse had gone through them. Liv tried not to look too guilty as Laura walked in.

“There you are. Dinner is ready.”

Was it dinner time already? Liv glanced at the time to see that she’d been watching Juliette paint for nearly two hours now.

“Great.” She cleared her throat, trying to get her voice to sound less squeaky. “We’ll be right out.”

Juliette looked shaken. Liv wondered whether she was disappointed or relieved that the almost-kiss had been interrupted.

All through dinner, Liv and Juliette spoke little, both immersed in their own thoughts, letting Laura and Kane carry on the conversation.

When dinner was finished, Liv followed Juliette to her room. This wasn’t unusual. They often spent time together talking before bed. This time, though, there was a subtle tension between them.

Liv perched on the edge of Juliette’s bed, and Juliette sat beside her. They usually sprawled out on opposite ends of the mattress, but Liv was too anxious to lie down right now.

“So… we were kind of interrupted earlier.”

Juliette didn’t say anything. Liv knew that this was a bad idea, but she had made her decision. She needed to know if Juliette regretted being stopped before kissing or not, and there was one sure way to find out.

Liv pressed a hand to Juliette’s cheek. “Tell me if you want me to stop,” she whispered. Very slowly, she leaned in and pressed her lips to Juliette’s.”

For a moment, Liv thought it was going to go exactly as she hoped. Juliette’s eyes fluttered shut and her lips parted slightly… then she leaped up, staggering three steps away from Liv, her eyes wide.

“Stop, Liv! I don’t – I’m – this is a mistake. You should go now.”

Fuck. Fuck, fuck, fuck, she’d really screwed up this time. Of course, Juliette didn’t want her. Juliette had already made it clear she was straight – she had the straight ally flag hanging in her room, for fuck’s sake. Liv was the biggest idiot ever to have lived. She had misread Juliette’s looks completely, transferring her own desire and fooling herself into believing that her feelings were returned.

“I’m sorry. Shit, I’m so sorry, Juliette. I didn’t – I thought you wanted me.”

“Liv, I like you a lot – as a friend. Nothing more than that. Please, I can’t do this.”

“Of course. Forgive me. I should go.”

Liv dashed out of the room, fighting back tears. She had kissed a woman who didn’t want her, knowing that said woman was straight.

She was the biggest piece of shit alive. How could she be so stupid?
