Chapter One

The banging on the front door jolted Krueger Kannon awake.

He squinted at the screen of his phone in the dark. 6:00 a.m.

“Piss off,” he muttered under his breath as he lay back down. Whoever it was, if he just ignored them, they would eventually go away.

A knock sounded on his window. “Kru? I know you’re in there,” Cadence called.

Shiiiit. Kru slumped in defeat. He stood corrected—anyone would go away, except for Cadence.

“Noooo,” he drawled out.

Another knock sounded on his window. “I need to talk to you.”

Kru groaned into his pillow. She was a pit bull on a bone, and apparently today, at this crack-of-dawn hour, it was his day to be the goddamn bone.

With a muttered curse, he pushed off the mattress and strode down the dark hallway for the door. He ran his hand roughly over the scruff on his face as he shoved open the door.

“Why do you keep your door locked?” Cadence asked.

“To keep you out,” he answered bluntly. Really, it was to keep everyone out. This Crew had boundary issues.

Cadence hit the light, and her eyes widened. “What happened to you?”

Confused, he looked down at his thin gray sweatpants. “I get hard in the mornings.”

Cadence’s gaze flew directly to his boner before she turned away in a rush. “I…uuuh…I wasn’t talking about your erection. Penis! I wasn’t talking about what your….uuuh…wiener does in the mornings. That’s none of my business. I was asking why you look beat up.”

He tossed himself a look in the front window’s reflection. His hair was a mess, and he still had the half-healed green bruising down the left side of his face from his bout at the fight barn last night. “I’m going back to bed.” Kru did an about-face and sauntered into his bedroom, then fell face-first onto the mattress on the floor. He was only halfway done building the bed frame. He had been busy since the move to Smashland Mobile Park, so the floor worked just fine for now.

“I still need to talk about something,” Cadence said as she followed him into his bedroom.

“You talk, I’ll sleep. It’s my only morning to sleep in this week.”

“Well, if you weren’t going out partying every night, you wouldn’t be so exhausted. Here, take these.”

With a frown, Kru looked up at the four painkillers she held cupped in her palm. She offered a bottled water in the other.

“Why are you giving me these?”

“Because I brought them.”

“That didn’t answer my question. Why?”

She shook the pills in her hand impatiently and offered them again. “Just take them.”

“I don’t feel like being drugged first thing in the morning.” He sat up in bed, took the pills and the water bottle from her, and then placed them on the night stand. “What is going on? Why are you here?”

“Well, I actually have a couple of things I want to say, after you take these.”

“Unless they are motherfucking sleeping pills that will get me out of whatever feelings-talk you are about to bully me into, I don’t need them.”

“It’s for your hangover.”

Okay, females were crazy in general, but this one was extra nuts this morning. He studied the earnestness in her eyes. She smelled like shampoo and hairspray, and her bleach-blonde hair was shaping her face in perfect curls. Her makeup was freshly done, and her eyelids were covered in dark, shimmery eye glitter. Her lips were painted burgundy, and all the dark made her eyes seem to glow an even brighter blue. She was staring at him with such confusing concern. “What hangover?” he asked.

“You’ve been drinking every night this week. I’ve been watching.”
