“Hey,” she answered.

“What’s wrong?”

“Can you work at Willa’s tomorrow night?”

Baffled, he shook his head and looked around. Dante and Jordan were still felling logs on the steep mountain slope, tossing him dirty looks. “Willa Barns?” he asked, confused.

“Yep. She said she needs you and Lucas and Gunner to help us move a warehouse.”

Kru squinted up at the clouds covering the sun. “You’re calling me at my job to ask me to do another job.”

“You’re at work? Where are you working?”

Kru narrowed his eyes at a raven floating across the sky and wondered if it was a shifter from Damon’s Mountains, or just a normal bird. “I’m on one of Kong’s logging crews.”

“You are? Since when?”

“Since I wanted to take the job. Why are you asking me to move Willa’s warehouse? I don’t think I’ve ever even talked to her.”

“I dunno. Willa just listed your name first.”

Kru blew air out of his cheeks. Damon’s Mountains had done a lot for him, and given him shelter when he needed it, so he was okay paying back some of that effort for one of the originals here. “When?”

“Tomorrow evening.”

“Okay. I can go over there after my shift. Wait, why are you asking for her? You and Willa are close?”

“I work at the worm farm.”

“Ooooh.” Dang, they really didn’t know that much about each other. He sat down on the log and set his chainsaw beside him. “I knew you worked, I just didn’t know where.”

“And I didn’t know you worked as a logger.”

“Mmm.” He grinned to himself and lowered his voice. “Do lumberjacks turn you on?”

“No. No, absolutely not, I am completely desensitized to the…allures…of lumberjacks.” Her words tumbled out too fast.

His grin stretched even bigger. He could get to this woman so easily. It was impossible not to try and mess with her. “What do you do at the wormery?”

“The wormery?”

He shrugged. “I don’t know what it’s called.”

Cadence cleared her throat. “Mostly I do shipping. Right now it’s coming up on the holiday season, so a lot of people are getting their kids beginner worm farms for holiday presents. We also run the biggest commercial shipping for bait shops in the United States, and I manage all output.”

“Sexy. So you like tugging at worms? Sounds like dirty work.”

“Oh my God, you’re such a pervert. You sound like my boss. Are you still in for tomorrow?”

“Sure, but if you keep this up, I’m going to start thinking you’re coming up with excuses to hang out with me. Worm-moving together tomorrow, and a date-night the day after that. Is there something you want to tell me, Cadence?”

She let off a frustrated little shriek, and then told him, “Willa asked me to ask you but I would rather do the work of two people if it means you don’t come, and also it’s called friend date-night!”

“What are you wearing right now?” he asked, ignoring her cute little tirade.

She got quiet for a few seconds. “I’m in coveralls with a logo that reads do you like my wormhole, and I’m covered in dirt and worm shit. Does that turn you on?”

Kru’s laugh surprised him. She was funny, and had painted the best picture in his mind. “You should wear that for date-night.”
