Cadence pursed her lips. She’d seen the saber-toothed tiger inside of him before, and she’d learned that getting Kru riled up was a dangerous game.

He huffed a humorless sound and strode for Landon.

“It’s okay—”

“No it’s not,” Kru clipped out. There was such steel truth in his tone.

Cadence hopped out of the truck and hugged the clipboard to her chest, unsure of what to do. She could call Willa if Kru Changed. Between the grizzly inside of the Almost Alpha, and Landon’s bear, and her tiger, maybe they could distract Kru long enough for one of the freaking dragons to show up or something.

Kru grabbed sleeping Landon by the back of the neck and ripped him out of his chair.

Landon’s eyes flew open and he struggled out of Kru’s grasp. “What the fuck, man? I was sleeping!”

“You’re sleeping?” Kru roared, advancing on him.

Landon stumbled back. “I don’t even know you.”

“You will. You’ll fucking remember my face every time you leave her to work on her own from here on.” Kru jammed a finger at Cadence, who stood frozen by the truck, unable to look away from the rage on Kru’s face. His eyes were bright green and couldn’t pass for human right now. He stared into Landon’s soul, and Landon, even though he was one of the sons of the Cursed Bear, dropped his gaze and headed for the truck.

“How can you feel good, man? Leaving this woman to do your job and hers. You think she doesn’t have shit to do? Cadence,” he barked. “When you get done with this job, what do you have to do?”

“Move the warehouse.”

“And then?” Kru asked.

“And then I have to do my own job that I had to miss today,” she murmured softly.

“You’ll have to work late, won’t you?”

Stunned to be so seen, she nodded once. “Yes.”

“Ha,” Kru’s angry laugh echoed through the clearing. He peeled his lips back from his teeth, and they were too sharp. Landon glanced up at him just in time to see it, and then held out his hand for the clipboard without a word.

“You’ll do it right?” Cadence asked, hugging the clipboard closer.

Landon reached out and grabbed the clipboard from her grasp.

“She asked you a fucking question!” Kru’s enraged tone had even Cadence dropping her gaze. God, he was dominant. So dominant. She hadn’t seen this side of him, and now she was wondering if he could give Lucas a run for Alpha of the Warlanders.

“I won’t fuck it up,” Landon murmured, eyes locked on Cadence’s. She could see and hear the truth in him.

Cadence swallowed hard, then nodded. “Okay. I’ll check it when you’re done.”

“You don’t have to. I’ll do it right.” Truth.

She huffed a sigh of relief. When she looked back to thank Kru, he was striding for the warehouse. She jogged to catch up, but when she was a few yards behind him, she could feel it—the heaviness.

“Hey,” she said, slipping her hand to the inside of his elbow.

Kru locked his legs and came to an abrupt stop. “How long has that been going on?”

Cadence shook her head. “Since he started here. I’m figuring it out.”

“You’re enabling him. A job is carrying weight together. When he drops his weight, you have to carry it, and that’s not okay, Cadence.”

“What do you want me to do? Fight him?”

“Fuckin’ fight him. I’ve seen your tiger. Remember who the fuck you are and put him in his place.”
