“I panicked,” she hissed.

“Yeah, well, I have another beer coming your way. That guy really asked if you were on meth, and he was one-hundred percent serious.”

Cadence pursed her lips and tried not to laugh, because Kru didn’t need the encouragement, but he was right.

“I think I’m really bad at this.”

“Not as bad as Lucia,” he murmured, gesturing to their dark-souled Crewmate across the room.

Lucia had her arms crossed over her chest and wore a scowl of disdain as she glared at the man talking to her across the table. Suddenly, she leaned over and kissed the man. Like…really planted her lips on him.

“Oh my,” Cadence uttered, unable to rip her gaze away from the face-suck.

“What is happening?” Kru whispered, humor evident in every word.

Lucia disengaged the kiss and the man swayed drunkenly. Cadence could see his cheeks swelling with a smile from here. “Is Lucia the best one of us at this?”

“Absolutely,” Kru said, staring. He blinked hard and dragged his attention back to her. “So when do you want to stop?”

“Stop what?”

“Pretending.”

Innocently, she said, “I don’t know what you are talking about. I am super interested in everything these nice men have to say.”

Kru had brought a beer with him. He sipped it, his eyes never leaving hers over the rim of his frosted glass.

“Anyone catch your attention?” she asked.

Kru looked around. “Maybe one did.”

“Ahhh. Is she pretty?”

“Very.”

“Witty?”

“As far as I could tell. Kinda bossy, too.” He grinned. “I like a little sass in a woman though.”

She looked around and tried to guess which heifer he was talking about. Maybe the brunette with the tattoos down her thigh? She wore a short skirt and seemed to be charming the pants right off the guy she was sitting across from.

“Why are we doing this dance?” Kru asked suddenly as he leaned forward across the table.

“One minute!” the announcer called. Wow, that was the first time she’d given them a heads-up.

“What dance?”

“The one where I only want to talk to you, and you only want to talk to me, and we are both pretending otherwise. We’re sitting here talking to all these people and neither one of us can quit looking at each other. I pity the filler-people. We are a waste of their time.”

She sat there stock-still, shocked. “You only want to talk to me?”

He nodded.

“Wait, but you said there was a woman you met here you are interested in.”

“Didn’t say I met her here.”

“But…you said she’s pretty and witty, and…and…”
