“Is this what you saw?” she asked Lucia softly.

The smile had long gone from Lucia’s face. Her Crewmate’s green eyes were unreadable. She lowered her gaze to Cadence’s shoes.

“Thanks for the heads-up.” She brushed past Lucia.

“Don’t blame it on me.”

“Girl-code says you watch out for your friends.” She turned as Lucia started to protest. “And before you say we aren’t friends? That’s bullshit. Yes we are.” Stupid burning tears.

She felt so embarrassed. Gunner was standing off to the side, and she couldn’t even meet his eyes. He was probably enjoying watching her get demolished. “I bet you think I deserve this, huh?” she asked as she passed.

Gunner shocked her to her bones when he murmured, “I don’t think anyone deserves it.” He jammed his chin back toward Kru.

Sasha was talking low to him, her lips near his ear. Kru’s eyes were hard like shards of glass as he stared toward the bar.

“Watch Jenna,” Gunner told her.

Confused, Cadence watched Jenna approach Kru…no…she was approaching Sasha with anger etched into every facet of her expression. Her eyes were lightened, and when she reached Sasha, she gripped her arm and ripped her backward.

The punch happened before Cadence could register that Jenna had even balled her fist. She hit Sasha so fuckin’ hard, the woman rocked backward and fell onto the floor. “Your fault!” she screamed at Kru, and then lifted her middle finger to Sasha, who was lurching to her feet to engage. Jenna squared up, and Cadence had never seen her friend so angry. She didn’t understand.

Gunner sighed beside her as they watched Lucas and Kru split them up and drag each of the women back. Lucia was headed toward Cadence and Gunner, looking utterly unsurprised. Oh, she’d seen this coming.

Cadence was annoyed. A heads-up would’ve been nice.

“Let’s go,” Lucia murmured as she passed.

“I’m not leaving Jenna. That’s not what friends do.”

“She’ll be outside in two minutes. We’re being kicked out of the bar.”

Cadence glared at her back. No they wer—

“All shifters, out!” the bartender yelled. “We are not breaking furniture tonight.”

Sasha was being held back by Kru, but the look on her face as she shrieked at Jenna stirred up something awful in Cadence. She stalked forward.

“Cadence—” Gunner warned.

“Leave with Lucia if you want!” she yelled over her shoulder. “No one’s stopping you.”

Jenna was going off, and Lucas was having trouble keeping her away from Sasha.

“Let me have her,” she roared, pushing him back.

Lucas was trying to be gentle, but when a woman snapped, gentle wasn’t going to stop her. Cadence gripped Jenna’s shoulders and pushed her straight back, back, back. When she had Jenna pinned against the wall, she blocked her view of Sasha and locked her eyes on her. “We’re leaving. She isn’t worth it.”

Jenna tried to see around her face again, but Cadence stayed in her way. “Hey. This has been fun, but we’re out of here. You and me are going to finish our fun night. Okay?”

The blind rage in Jenna’s eyes faltered. “What?”

“I’m taking you to a bar across town. Fuck them boys. Me and you will go have a beer and a good laugh about all this.”

“It’s not funny, Cadence. You’re better than her.”

Cadence tried to hide her smile. God bless Jenna and her loyalty, and her unwavering belief in Cadence. She inhaled deeply. “She’s Kru’s problem. Not ours.”

“But…you like him.”
