Cadence snorted. “I have to admit, it was so satisfying hearing the crack of your fist against that twatmuffin’s face.”

“I can kind of see why that guy was saying he doesn’t date shifters,” Jenna said as she pulled out of the parking lot, waving to the boys as they loaded up in Gunner’s truck. “I never thought about it before, but I guess shifters have tempers.”

“Speak for yourself. I have never been so well-behaved,” Cadence joked. “I haven’t even mauled Landon Fuller. I’m basically tame now.”

“You just don’t want to maul him because then you’ll have to mess with his dad,” Lucia said from the back seat.

“If I told Clinton I punched his son, Clinton would laugh.”

“That’s probably true.”

“Are we toxic?” Cadence asked.

Jenna tossed her a frown. “Of course not. We just live by different rules than humans.”

“I’m toxic,” Lucia muttered.

Cadence hid a smile. She was kind of enjoying hanging out with Lucia tonight. Her one-liners were actually kind of funny.

“Remember that one time we went to a speed-dating night and ruined it for everyone in the bar?” Jenna asked with a laugh.

“Yeah, I remember fifteen minutes ago. Really, we probably provided entertainment.”

“Turn in at this gas station,” Lucia said.

“Oh, okay,” Jenna said, hitting the brakes hard so she could make the sharp turn.

When they were parked, Lucia shoved her door open and told them, “Wait here, I’ll be right back.”

Cadence and Jenna exchanged glances, but Lucia had told the truth. She was right back. Maybe two minutes passed before she was scrambling back up into the back seat with a bottle of something in both hands.

“Did you just buy booze on the way to a bar?” Cadence asked. “That’s hardcore.”

“It’s not booze. It’s way better.” She handed up one of the chilled bottles, and Cadence read the label. Sparkling grape juice.

“It’s made local,” she said.

“Is it like moonshine?” Jenna asked, confusion knitted into her brows as she stared at the bottle.

“No! It’s non-alcoholic, you lushes. Drive.”

Jenna shrugged at Cadence and backed out of the parking space, and then they were off again. Only before they hit the road Cadence’s favorite bar was on, Lucia pointed to a turnoff and had Jenna take a right on a one-lane dirt road.

Jenna kept up her speed until they saw a no-trespassing sign nailed to a tree. It had three bullet holes in it.

“Um, I have concerns,” Jenna admitted softly.

“I put that sign there,” Lucia said. “Just keep going.”

“Wait, where are we?” Cadence asked, twisting around to look at Lucia.

“We’re at a safe place.”

“Safe from what?”

“Safe to say whatever we want.”

Cadence didn’t understand.
