“Get off me, asscrack,” Lucia growled, shoving a sleeping Landon so hard in the shoulder, he went flying and slid against the wall.

“Dude. You were laying on me! I wasn’t touching you on purpose!”

Lucia was propped up on her two locked arms, giving Landon a death glare as he stood and dusted off the seat of his jeans. “Why would I want to touch a flat-chested, semi-evil weirdo? You probably read books.” He looked flustered as he looked around the floor. “Did I bring anything here? Shit.” Was he blushing? Landon stomped over to his medical kit and yanked it up so hard, a few packages of bandages fell out. “Smelling like popcorn. Your hair looks like a rat’s nest!”

Landon flipped Lucia off, but she still hadn’t moved, and when he left, Landon slammed the door hard enough to rattle the mobile home.

Kru lay there in utter shock, and Cadence had frozen against him too.

The door opened again, and Landon was definitely blushing. He came back inside and glared at Lucia. “Books are cool, and I like the smell of popcorn.”

“Fuck you,” Lucia gritted out.

“Well…fuck you, too.” Landon hooked his hand on his hip, just glaring at her in confusion like he wanted to say more, then shifted his weight, cast a quick glance around, and left again.

“I’m so confused,” Kru murmured. “Were you just flirting?”

“No!” Lucia shrieked at a volume that hurt his ears. From the way Cadence tensed, he would go out on a limb and say it hurt her ears as well.

Kru reached over, ignoring the pain in his chest, to place both of his hands over Cadence’s ears. “Easy. It was just a question.”

“Well,” Lucia yelled. “I have a question for you!”

“What question?” Jenna asked from where she and Lucas had clearly woken up on the couch.

Lucia pulled the neck of her black T-shirt to her nose and sniffed. “Do I really smell like popcorn?”

It was Lucas who answered. “How would we know that? We don’t try to get that close to you, Lucia. You scare us.”

Lucia scrambled to her feet. “Good! You should all fear me.” She rested her hands on her hips and looked around the room awkwardly. “I’m going to go to my home now. Far away from here.” Her eyes darted to Kru. “My visions tell me you are going to live.”

“I’m aware.” The monstrous appetite had tipped him off.

“Great.” Lucia left without another word.

“Bye, best friend,” Cadence called as Lucia slammed the door.

Lucia returned momentarily and told Cadence, “Bye to you and to Jenna. Kru and Lucas…fall down a well.” Slam!

“Was that a curse?” Lucas asked. “Are we really at risk of falling down a well now?”

“I don’t think so, but I’ll talk to her,” Jenna said around her laughter.

Kru frowned at the idea of death-by-well. “Landon Fuller just said the words ‘books are cool.’ Does he even know how to read?”

Beside him, Cadence shook with quiet laughter.

“Crucial announcement, I’m sitting up,” he ground out as he struggled upward.

Cadence, bless her heart and soul, sat up so fast she blurred and pushed him upward. Hell, it hurt.

“Crucial announcement,” Lucas said, “we’ve got to get ready for work. Crew meeting tonight,” he said as he helped Jenna off the couch.

“About what?” Kru groaned.

“About the rules for fighting Crew members from here on out. Eight p.m., meet at the firepit out front.”

“Will there be food?” Kru asked.
