“Did you disobey my order?” Lucas demanded to Kru.

Cadence pursed her lips and hid her eyes from the Alpha.

“In my defense, I wasn’t conscious when you made the order,” Kru said cooly.

“What the fuck, Kru. There’s no way someone in the Crew didn’t tell you the order.”

Kru shrugged his shoulders. “I was almost dead. And his middle name is Cameron.”

For a few moments, it looked like Lucas wanted to flip the table. “What’s the point of laying down an Alpha order if you all just disobey me?”

“I didn’t set his leg,” Lucia said, raising her hand.

Cadence was doing her best to hide her laughter, but her stupid shoulders were shaking.

“It’s not funny!” Lucas told them.

“In my defense, I told him not to,” Gunner said.

“And yet he did, and here you are bringing four hundred chicken wings to a Crew meeting. I’ve asked one thing of you.”

Kru was still eating like he wasn’t in trouble. “My name is Krueger Dalton Kannon.”

Lucas was just staring at him with the bright-gold eyes of his animal. “It was an accident,” Kru lied badly. The crooked smile on his lips said he didn’t care about disobeying the Alpha’s order.

Lucas ran his tongue over his teeth and arched his eyebrows up. “Sometimes I hate this fucking Crew.”

Dead silence fell over the clearing, and then Gunner pushed a bag of fries toward Lucas. “Potatoes will make it better.”

Okay, Cadence had to cover her face to hide her laughter now. From the helpless noises across the table, Jenna was doing the same thing. Kru leaned over and buried his face against Cadence’s neck and tried to stifle his laughter.

“I truly hate you all,” Lucas lied.

“Not me. I’ve been good,” Lucia announced.

“Shut uuuup, brownnoser,” Jenna said, throwing a fry at Lucia.

“I am perfect,” Lucia said in a robotic voice. “I should be Second in the Crew.”

“Wait, we’re picking Second?” Kru asked, pulling away from Cadence’s neck.

“All of you are a disaster,” Lucas said. “Except for Jenna.”

“You’re just saying that because she lets you touch her boobs,” Kru argued.

“No,” Lucas barked out. “She’s actually normal. She didn’t try to kill a Crewmate, or fall in love with a Fuller today, or disobey an Alpha order and set Gunner Cameron’s broken leg, that he earned!”

Cadence raised her hand. “I just want to point out that I am perfect and innocent.”

“You knew Kru disobeyed my order, didn’t you?” Lucas asked.

Cadence scratched the back of her head, pursed her lips, and refused to answer. Touché.

Silence descended over the Crew. After a loaded minute, Kru said, “We could make Steve the Second,” and then ducked fast as Lucia threw her plate of wings at him.

And now Cadence was wrapping her arms around her stomach as she laughed.

“I’m not picking a Second yet,” Lucas said, but his eyes were dancing with amusement. He wanted to laugh. He really did.
