Epilogue

“Do you know why Lucas wanted to do the Crew meeting at a bar?” Cadence asked, steadying the plastic container of brownies she’d made.

Kru slid his hand over her thigh and took his eyes off the road long enough to smile at her. “You don’t like this bar?”

“I love this bar, it’s just a dangerous game for the Warlanders.”

“I suggested it,” Kru admitted.

That drew her up, and she studied his handsome profile. He’d trimmed his beard down this morning, and had gone to the barber to get a haircut after work. He was wearing the cologne she loved so much, and a forest green T-shirt that made his eyes look even brighter.

“You did?” she asked, stifling a smile.

“Open the glove box.”

She reached over the brownies and pulled the handle to the glove box. A folded piece of paper sat in there. She glanced at him, but he was watching the road intently.

She pulled it out and scanned the printed paper.

It was the results of the speed-dating night they’d had months ago.

The only match on his page was…her.

Ooooh. Her heart.

“You kept this?”

“Of course I did. It was two months ago today.”

Eight weeks had flown by. She clutched the paper to her chest. Eight weeks since she’d realized how much she hated him giving attention to other potential mates. Eight weeks since she’d fallen head over heels for him. Five weeks since the war with Sasha.

Eight weeks of building up with the Warlanders.

Those eight tiny weeks had passed in the blink of an eye.

“Can I keep this printout?” she asked.

“Sure. I printed this one just for you. I have a copy for me too.”

“Is this like an anniversary?” she asked.

“Sure is,” he murmured, pulling into the gravel parking lot. He parked in the same spot he had all those weeks ago.

Lucas’s truck and Gunner’s truck were already here.

“We’re celebrating our anniversary with the Crew?” she asked, hope filling her chest.

“I thought you wouldn’t mind.”

“I have a present for you,” she blurted out.

He turned off the engine and then faced her, pulled her hand to his lips and studied her face. “You didn’t have to get me anything.”

“I’ve had it for a while. I was just waiting for the perfect moment.”

“Now is the moment?” he asked.

She hid her blush, unzipped the secret pocket of her purse, and pulled out a tiny wrapped present. “Now feels right,” she said, handing it to him. “Unless you reject it, then it will ruin the whole night, so, you know…don’t reject it.”
