“Why would you? You were always with your family.”

“Yeah, but if you were with Matt that often…” She shook her head, trying hard to remember. “I was in the Gray Backs. I should remember.”

“It’s okay,” he murmured. “Your shot.”

“Do you remember me?”

“Of course,” he said immediately. He ran his hand down the scruff on his face. “Why the hell do you think I was trying to hang out with Jax and Jathan so much?”

Lucia’s mouth fell open. “Wait…”

“Your shot,” he said.

“Wait, you…”

“If I was you, I would pay attention to the five. You see that orange one over there?”

He was dismissing the conversation.

“Why did my question about the Crew bother you?” she asked, unable to help herself.

“Because when I wanted to move to Montana, Matt said Beaston had told him I would find a better life if I stayed. He said Damon’s Mountains needs a healer, and I was that.”

“How did you become a healer?” she asked, remembering how good he’d been at saving Kru’s life when he and Gunner had gone to war a couple months ago.

“Have you met my family? The Fullers are good at three things—drinking, cussing, and bleeding.”

A laugh escaped her. It was kind of true.

“And then I was hanging out with the Gray Backs, and all y’all do is fight. I learned early that I don’t mind blood, and for some reason when someone’s hurt, my head goes really quiet and focused and I just…” He shrugged.

“You just what?”

“I just know what to do. So Matt asked me to stay. He asked hard. Wouldn’t let me even look at places in Montana. He was using everything he could at the time, too. Saying Willa would miss me, and her sons had left. Putting that on me. Saying he would have no purpose if I left. Saying we would lose people in Damon’s Mountains if I wasn’t around to stitch them up. All bullshit, but I love him, you know?”

“You….love…Matt Barns?” She’d never heard a man say the L-word so easily.

“And Willa, and their sons. Matt said he swore Beaston knew better than me.”

“And you stayed.”

“And I stayed. I’m fucking alone and never got an invite from a Crew, so I’m just stuck in the Boarlanders because I’m a legacy.”

“The Boarlanders are a good Crew,” she whispered, trying to make him feel better.

“Yeah.” He twitched his head toward the table. “Five ball.”

“You’re mad at my dad,” she said softly.

He clenched his teeth so hard, his jaw twitched. “Five ball.”

“If he saw a vision—”

“I just want to have fun with you tonight,” he said low, pleading in his eyes.

Okay. All right. She was digging too deeply, and she understood him posting up. She made big walls to keep people out too. Their walls matched.

“I’ll tell you something,” she said, lining her shot up.
