“Move,” the wolf growled behind her.

Burke could talk? A scream clogged her throat as something rushed the firelight.

A black wolf bore down on her at a frightening speed. She was only able to register the teeth aimed for her for a split moment before the animal was on top of her.

She kicked straight up and the wolf went flying, and in one smooth motion, she pulled the blade Lenny had made sure she knew was in the side pocket of her work boot. She stood and gripped the handle of that blade as the gray wolf fought the black one savagely.

Blood sprayed across her face and dress. When a white wolf rushed the fire, she screamed as she arched the blade through the air.

With a yelp, the wolf sidled her arch and skidded out of the firelight. “Eliza!” the wolf snarled.

“What the bollocks,” she uttered as she came face-to-face with eyes so familiar. “Lenny?”

“Run,” the wolf snarled.

“W-wha-w—”

“Go!” the gray wolf barked as he fought the black wolf.

Another gunshot hit the glowing embers of the fire, so close to her she could feel the breeze of the bullet.

She ducked with a yelp and bolted after the white wolf. Where had Lenny even come from?

Another bullet hit the dirt near her feet. She tripped and fell, slicing her hand on the blade she was carrying.

Lenny circled back. “Hurry!”

She stayed with Eliza, running beside her and blocking her from whoever was shooting. The next shot went high, zinging through the air and echoing as it didn’t land.

What was happening? Where was Garret?

A man’s scream sounded with pure agony, and the gunshots ceased.

“Keep moving!” Lenny snarled.

A whimper crawled out of Eliza’s throat as she ran blindly through the dark, eyes on the tail of that massive white wolf.

This couldn’t be real. This couldn’t be happening!

A howl sounded nearby. She ducked in fear, but kept running. Something was getting closer. She could feel something big bearing down on them. Eliza looked over her shoulder in terror, and she could see a pair of glowing eyes so close.

“Lenny!” she screamed.

The white wolf reacted instantly, turning and squaring off with the wolf that was chasing them. With a snarl, she attacked the dark wolf just as it reached Eliza’s skirts.

Oh no, oh no, oh no! Even in this minimal light, the wolf looked so much bigger than Lenny!

A yelp of pain sounded, and Eliza hated it. The noise was her friend, she could tell. She didn’t know how, but she could.

Pit-pat, pit-pat. The blood from the cut on her hand was dripping onto the ground. She gripped the handle of the knife tighter as the roaring in her ears turned deafening.

The wolf was hurting Lenny.

Lenny.

Lenny.

Her friend Lenny.
