She hated him.

Eliza gritted her teeth and bolted for the fight. She leapt onto the massive back of that dark-furred monster and stabbed as deep and as hard and as fast as she could.

She was thrown and went sailing, and the pain when she hit the ground was excruciating. It felt as if a thousand daggers pierced her skin. She shrieked in pain, and looked up just in time to see a light gray wolf sailing through the air for her.

“Oh God,” she whispered as she moved to throw her hands out.

The wolf’s teeth were bared, its eyes full of bloodlust, and this was about to hurt so badly.

Just as the paws were poised to make contact, something enormous and dark barreled into the side of him like a cannonball. The wolf broke sideways and disappeared into the darkness. There was growling and then a moment later, an echoing yelp, and then…and then…nothing.

Lenny’s white wolf was standing next to the body of the dark one, staring at Eliza, her ears flattened, her eyes wide, panting. She had wet, dark stains on her fur, barely visible in the muted blue moonlight.

Pain was all she knew right now. Wincing, Eliza tried to sit up, but there were a thousand cactus needles in her. A shuddering sigh of pain escaped her.

“This way,” something monstrous said from the dark, and Eliza froze in fear as a titan appeared out of the shadows.

This wolf was different from the rest. He was enormous, bigger than the others by a lot, and as he slid a glowing-eyed glare to her, she could see the crimson dripping from his muzzle.

His eyes were the familiar icy-blue she’d come to recognize.

“Garret,” she uttered.

He flattened his ears and pulled his lips back from blood-soaked teeth, then moved off into the shadows.

Eliza struggled to stand up, and did her best to limp behind Lenny. She was hurt. She was really hurt, and Garret didn’t care. He’d disappeared completely, and she was left struggling to make it back to the remnants of the campfire.

When she finally made it, Garret was rolling her bed blankets, clad only in pants, his eyes almost white and a constant snarl in his chest.

Cookie, Wells, and Burke were packing their things silently.

“Boss, she’s hurt,” Burke murmured softly.

“Well, that’s what she gets for jumping on the back of a fucking werewolf!” Garret yelled. He stood and rounded on her. “What the hell were you thinking?”

“I…” Eliza looked down at the blood-covered knife she still held in her hand. “I was scared for Lenny.”

“Lenny can take care of herself. You’re human! Do you know what would’ve happened if one of them bit you?”

“I…” She frowned. “I didn’t do this to myself! I was just trying to help!”

“You shouldn’t have been out here in the first place!”

“Boss,” Burke said softly.

“No!” Garret yelled. “You don’t get it. None of you get it! They were waiting for her to come out here. They were waiting on a weak link, and they made their move the night she came out here.”

“Who?” she demanded.

“Jennings’s Pack! You were the perfect distraction.”

Eliza shook her head, baffled by his anger. “I didn’t mean to.”

“Garret, she’s hurt,” Lenny said, and at the edge of the firelight, she could see the woman pulling a shirt over her head. “Let her be.”

“Yeah, she fell into a cactus and cut her own hand, Lenny.”

“She saved my life!” The petite woman screamed at him. Her voice echoed through the clearing. “She barely knows how to use a knife, and that didn’t stop her! I was losing! She killed that wolf. For me!” Lenny sidled up to Garret and glared up at him. “Yeah, she fell into a cactus. You know what you do when your mate falls into a cactus? You help her.”
