Mason grinned at her while rubbing his throat. “No, I didn’t store my grandma in an open vase. Also, nice aim.”

She rubbed her temples and then rested her hands over her chest. “You scared me so bad. I really thought I was about to be haunted by one supremely offended grandma. I’d definitely haunt someone if they dropped a rainbow dil- pickle. If someone dropped a dill pickle on me? So mad.”

Forrest ran back into the room with a square block of ice in his hands. “Here you go, Mom!”

Violet took the ice and juggled it between her hands as she bent forward and pressed a kiss to his head. “Thanks, baby.”

Justin handed her the glass, sans the cock ring, and watched her with humor-filled eyes. “You definitely make life more colorful, Vi.”

She grunted and drained the glass of water before handing it back to him. “On that note, I think it’s time to go home and start making supper.”

“But, Mom!”

“No buts, mister. You got to spend all day over here. You can see everyone again tomorrow.” Violet looked up at Justin. “What time should I come over to walk General and Captain in the morning?”

The three of us shook our heads in unison. I wasn’t sure how she’d take the next bit of news, so I just spit it out. “We don’t need you to walk the dogs anymore.”

She frowned. “Why not?”

“Because you’re the mother of our—” I cut myself off. “Because General and Captain can be a lot and we’d feel better if you weren’t out, walking around on your own.”

She planted her hands on her hips. “Then give me another job. I’m not staying for free.”

Mason shrugged. “You are.”

She shook her head hard enough to send her hair flying around. “I’ll walk the dogs then. I’m not helpless.”

“If you want to join me on my morning walk with the dogs at seven each morning, I won’t stop you.” Justin pulled two walkie-talkies out of his pocket and handed one to Forrest. “This way, you can call us if you need us. Your mom was right about you being too young to be the man of the house right now. We’ll take that job, if you want.”

Forrest took the walkie-talkie and jumped up and down. “I’ve always wanted a walkie-talkie!”

Violet sighed. “I hope you know what you just started.”

At least she seemed distracted from the dog walking. I watched as she turned towards our front door and cast one last look back at us. With the sunlight coming in from behind her, she looked like an angel. She glowed, just like the night we’d met. She’d been standing under a neon bar sign and she’d looked like a goddess.

We’d all fallen for her instantly back then. I had a feeling time had done nothing to dull that reaction in us. There was just something about Violet.

CHAPTER 15

Violet

“You’d better be in bed with your teeth brushed, kid!” I finished putting away our left-overs and washed my hands. “If you’re not, you’re going to be surprised when I make Voldemort look sweet and innocent!”

I heard giggling and when I made it to Forrest’s bedroom, I saw he was under his blanket with a flashlight. I stood in the doorway to see what he was doing and felt my heart melt when I heard a static crackle and my son’s urgent whispering.

“Mom’s coming! I have to go!”

“Alright, Forrest. Listen to your Mom.” Justin’s voice was slightly robotic through the walkie-talkie. “Give her a kiss on the cheek for me.”

Forrest giggled. “Mommy never lets boys kiss her. My friend, Bonnie, says her mom is always kissing new boys. Mom never does, though. Grandma said it’s because Mom did all her kissing in college.”

I scowled. My mother could be a real pain in the ass. She felt no qualms about saying mean things about me to Forrest. He couldn’t understand them as a kid, but eventually he would be able to.

“Pshh. I’m sure your Grandma is right about a bunch of other stuff, but your mom barely kissed anyone at school. I knew her a little bit when she was younger and she was a good girl.” Justin sounded like he was smirking but then he suddenly coughed and rushed on. “Not that kissing makes you bad. Damn. It’s hard to not say stupid stuff.”

“And you swore.”

“If we start counting swears, I may as well never speak again, buddy.”
