I shrugged. “Levi’s still the reasonable one when he isn’t allowing his wolf to get the better of him.”

“And what of you? The last thing I remember was—”

“How I got this scar. I know.”

She fell silent for a little while. “Does it still hurt?”

I shrugged. “I’ve gotten used to it.”

“The healer didn’t find a way to rid you of the pain?”

I grinned. “I see you remember more than you let on.”

She sighed. “It was a rough time for a lot of people.”

He snickered. “Yeah, I’m sure your scar really hurt.”

She shot me a look. “I’m being serious, Hudson.”

I did my best to not stare at her reflection as she stood there with me, watching Levi throw a goddamn fit in the front yard. She sure as hell wasn’t the skinny eleven-year-old I remembered throughout my teenage years, and I wanted to tell her how good she looked. Even with the damn pink hair. And especially with that dip in her waist and her toned curves; her breasts spilling out of her shirt. It was a wonder she came alone instead of with some man in her life.

Her green eyes were just as piercing as ever, though.

Like the green waves of the ocean before a decadent thunderstorm.

“You look good, Hudson,” Raven said softly.

I wiggled my eyebrows. “Guess that makes two of us, then.”

She snickered. “Hardly, but thanks.”

And that was when I turned to face her, studying her with the full force of my attention. “You’re beautiful, Raven. Don’t you dare let me catch you talking about yourself like that again. I don’t tolerate lies. Understood?”

She searched my eyes for a long time before she nodded. “Okay.”

“Good,” I said as I turned back toward the window. “I’m glad we’re in agreement about something.”

“But that doesn’t mean I won’t think it.”

I couldn’t help but smile. “You always did have to have the last word.”

“It’s a talent of mine.”

“Ah, fuck!” Dean exclaimed as he knelt down to the ground.

Raven whipped around. “Dean, are you okay?”

I reached out and gripped her forearm. “Don’t.”

She ripped away from me. “Don’t what? He’s clearly in pain. What’s going on with him?”

I turned away from the window. “One of the things an alpha does for us is it helps us curb our powers. The alpha of our pack blankets us with a sense of peace and resilience that isn’t found anywhere else. Without the guidance of an appointed alpha, our powers are raging out of control. That’s why Levi is so angry. That’s why Dean is in pain. His headaches are getting worse with his visions that haunt him just about every single hour of every single day.”

The anger behind her eyes faltered. “Is that why your scar looks worse?”

I nodded slowly. “Yes. We’re all in pain. Physical pain that will only become excruciating as time moves forward without your father.”

And just like that, she threw her walls back up. I could see the shift in her eyes. “Well, instead of being pissed at me, you guys should be pissed at my father. It was on him to teach me this, not my human mother. And he was completely absent after we left. After he promised we’d see each other soon. That’s the last memory I have of my father, Hudson. Him making a promise I waited years for him to keep. Do you know what that does to someone?”
