Let me out.

The second the growling voice echoed off the corners of my mind, my eyes shot open. I swallowed hard, stuffing the sizzling electricity down into the pit of my gut. I reached for the glass front door and swung it open, readying myself for whatever stupid bullshit was in my father’s will that Elias wanted to lecture me about in person. And as I pushed away the voice in my head, I clung to the few memories of my childhood that I had.

Memories of Dean, Levi, and Hudson.

The boys that practically defined my sexual development before Mom’s divorce.

“Miss Kennedy,” Elias said as he stood from his chair, “come in, please. Have a seat. Are you hungry?”

I walked over to the chair in front of his desk. “No.”

“Well, if you are, I have pizza on the way. You’re more than welcome to a slice.”

“Tomato sauce kicks up my GERD.”

He blinked. “Right. Well, I could order you something else if you—”

I sat down in the chair and crossed my leg over my knee. “Let’s stay on track. I’m only here for the day, so whatever we need to do, we need to get it done.”

He eyed me carefully. “All right, then. Let’s get started.”

Walking into his office was like walking into a den of wolves. I smelled it on him the instant I walked into his dark expanse of an office. The damned room was the size of my entire apartment, and the curtains drawn over his windows gave a cold, hard feeling to a room filled with warm reds and rich yellows. Greenery thrived everywhere. He had indoor plants in every corner, lining the walls of his office and even sprouting from on top of his bookcases.

I watched as Elias, yet another wolf shifter hiding amongst humans, made himself comfortable. I followed him carefully, making sure this wasn’t some sort of trap I had slipped into, because if there was any lesson my father had taught me growing up, it was this:

Never let your guard down for a fucking second.

“Do you want me to go through the will page by page with you?” Elias asked.

I grinned. “What do you think?”

He clicked his tongue. “Right. Okay. Well, the gist of the will is that you have inherited everything your father has ever owned. His truck. His home here in Portland. His home in Bend. His bank accounts.”

“I know what ‘everything’ means.”

He peeked his eyes over at me. “It also means that you’ve inherited the pack.”

I blinked. “Say that again?”

He set the papers down. “You have inherited the Ironcrest Pack, Raven.”

“Miss Kennedy,” I said mindlessly.

The pack? As in, the entire pack? My father wanted me to step up and lead some fucking pack like a goddamn alpha? Had he lost his fucking mind!?

“I’m not even a full wolf,” I whispered.

Elias shook his head. “It’s what his will stipulates. I’m just here to help execute it.”

I stood to my feet. “Why can’t another full blood pack member take over? That makes so much more sense.”

“Because your father is very clear in his will that he wants you to take over.”

“Why? Because I’m his only child and he’s got no son to pass his shit onto? Sounds like he shouldn't have screwed my mother over then, if that’s what we’re talking about.”
