Hey! Not fair!

As the earth rumbled beneath our feet, wolves poured from every orifice of the mountain that we occupied. Some of them emerged from caves, their mouths covered in blood and sinew as the intoxicating smell of venison tugged me toward the openings. The cave-dwelling wolves tossed me a haunch with their bare teeth, almost as if to offer me a sacrifice.

FEED ME FOOD! FEED ME NOW!

I dipped my head down, following my instincts even though I had no idea where the hell they were coming from. The cave-dwelling gray wolves dipped down along with me, their fur still dripping with the blood of the animal they had sank their teeth into. While my stomach grumbled, I still couldn’t imagine eating a deer raw like that. However, I took the sacrifice in between my teeth anyway, then went in search of the hungry children playing tag while running in between all of the trees.

Catch, you guys!

I tossed the massive haunch into the air and the pups emerged from the darkness. They slammed down on top of the bloodied piece of meat and I took a few steps back, watching as they pulled the meat from every inch of the deer’s bone. My wolf cried out inside of my head. It urged me to push forward. It urged me to take a bite. Just one bite. A small, teensy little bite of the bloodied goodness.

I resisted the urge, however.

Because I knew that once I shifted back into human form, I’d throw it up.

“You’re doing great,” Hudson said as he walked up to me.

I tried not to look as startled as I felt, because good God, I couldn’t see him in the darkness. “You think so?”

Levi came up from my right. “You’re keeping yourself under control nicely. That’s keeping the pack under control.”

“Is your wolf always hungry?” Brody asked as he trotted up to us.

A grin spread across my jowls. “Always, it seems.”

“Don’t worry,” Dean said as he came up from my left, “fresh deer won’t seem so gross with time.”

“So, all of you go through that stage?” I asked.

“No,” the answered in unison.

I paused. “You guys suck, you know that?”

“I SMELL BEAR!”

The hairs on the nape of my neck stood on end. I whipped around, allowing the wind to cascade over my fur. I sniffed the air deeply as the putrid scent of wet shit filled my nostrils. It curdled my stomach, tying it into knots as I mindlessly dug my claws into the dirt.

“I WANT THE BEAR! LET’S GET THE BEAR!”

“Raven,” Brody said calmly.

I licked my lips. They’re out there. I smell their shit.

Hudson walked up to me before wrapping in front of me, blocking the wind as it charged my face. “We all smell it. Keep yourself in control.”

“The scent,” I said as I shook my head, “I have to follow the scent.”

“No, you don’t,” Levi said as he stood beside Hudson in front of me, “just turn around.”

“Guys,” Dean said, “the little ones are starting to panic.”

Because Raven is panicking, Brody said.

The scent was overwhelming. Saliva dripped from my fangs as I bared my teeth for the world to see. My stomach churned with a need for bear’s blood. Their juicy meat. Their warm hide, tossed over the edge of my bed back at home. I wanted to sink my teeth into its jugular and bleed it dry, cleaning the meat for those back at home.

I had no idea how in the hell I even wanted something like that. But, the longer I inhaled that scent, the more furious I became. I lusted for blood. For the metallic taste to barrel over my tongue and slide down the back of my throat. My stomach growled as loudly as my throat, and as I paced around in a circle my heart rate climbed into the clouds.

I started stomping my paws in place. “I gotta run. Run, guys. Run for meat. Run for food. Bear. I need bear!”
