And they had done it to us.

“Levi, come on!” Dean bellowed.

Our pack members soared through the air, shifting midway before slamming down onto all fours. They chomped into the necks of the bears that poured into our town from every orifice I could see. The blue hue of the mountains slowly crept closer to our neighborhood. I watched as Dean charged headfirst into the fight, ripping women and children out of the way and tossing them to the side.

And when I saw one of those fucking bears stare down a two-year-old I had helped deliver, I lost it.

“Oh, no you fucking don’t, you goddamn coward,” I growled.

I had no idea where on God’s great green creation our supposed new alpha was, but I didn’t care. The second I shifted into my wolf, I lost all sense of regard. I jumped in front of the boy, pushing him across the road with my back hind leg. And as that bear soared toward me, his claws outstretched and ready for my neck, I unhinged my jaw.

Sinking my teeth right into that fucker’s jugular.

“Goddamn it, I’m hungry for bear.”

I wrapped my teeth around the main artery of that bear’s neck and ripped it clear from his body. I watched as the bear slowly morphed back into a pathetic little man who shivered and gurgled on his own blood. I stomped my foot against the man’s neck, breaking it and watching as his lifeless eyes stared back at me.

Then, I soared into the air and sought out my next target.

“Dean, I need you at the house. Wait, no. Scratch that. They’re coming from the mountains. I need you to—Levi. Are you near the mountains? Shit, hold on. Fucking hell! No!”

Brody’s commanding voice echoed off the corners of my mind and he seemed as confused as ever. What a fucking crock of shit. The man couldn't even handle a simple fight. He had no idea where the hell to send people. He had no idea how to command the troops at his disposal. He would’ve done a better job had he done nothing at all, for fuck’s sake!

“Time to rip these idiots to shreds.”

Without Hudson with us, it was up to me and Dean to make sure these bears didn’t breach the threshold of the compound. They had already found their way through the woods, but they sure as hell wouldn’t get to our most sacred grounds. I knew what they wanted. They wanted to dig up the graves of our dead and feast on their bones. They wanted to desecrate everything we held near and dear to our hearts simply because they were heartless.

And as I dug one of those bear’s hearts out with my fucking teeth, I chewed it up and swallowed it whole.

Before leaping onto the back of another bear that charged right past me.

One by one, I devoured them whole. Dean growled and howled, trying to pick up little ones in his jowls so he could get them to safety. He cleared a pathway for me that led straight through the throng of bears in front of me, and one by one I mowed them down. I had been gunning for blood for much too long. I had kept in control of my wolf for far too many years. And as I set my sights on the massive black bear off in the distance, I allowed the darkness of my wolf’s mind to overtake me.

Slaughter them all, I commanded.

I had no idea how long I fought. I had no idea how many bears I had killed. But when I came to—panting and sweating and spent—I found dozens of bear bodies around me. I stumbled on my feet as my bloodthirsty wolf prepared itself for yet another round. I cracked my neck and dug my claws into the dirt, waiting for more of those fucking shifters to show their asses. But as I looked at the carnage around me, I realized something.

The bears hadn’t stopped coming.

They had just stopped coming for me.

Never in my life had I experienced such blood and such loss. Never in my life had we been attacked so fervently and so regularly by our enemies to the north. I had no idea what in the hell had possessed such a thing within them. Though, I had a feeling it had something to do with Colin’s death. They knew we were vulnerable, so they had obviously figured it was as good of a time as any to try and take us out.

“Brody, what is your command?”

I reached out to him, as much as it hurt, because we needed orders. We needed a voice of reason amidst the chaos. But he didn’t respond.

“Brody! Where are you!?”

And that was when a gurgling sound filled my mind.

“Dean,” I said as I looked around.

His growl filled my mind. “Kind of busy here.”

A bear flew over my head before I turned and looked in his direction. Nice throw.

His wolf face nodded. Thanks. What do you need?
