“Can’t you go any faster?” Hudson growled.

I scoffed. “If you think you can run any quicker, be my guest and throw yourself out the door.”

He unbuckled his seatbelt. “Don't mind if I do.”

I balked at him. “Wait, Hudson, I wasn’t being—Hudson!”

He threw open the car door and lunged himself out into the road, and as he shifted before my very eyes he pounded the pavement. I ripped my gaze forward, pressing the gas pedal all the way down to the fucking floorboard of the car as the sign for Bend finally came into view. Hudson jumped over the car, clearing it by at least ten feet. And as he slammed down in front of me, he led the charge into town.

Even though he ran faster than seventy fucking miles an hour.

“Good God,” I whispered to myself.

His all-black wolf was barely visible, but I kept my stare locked with him anyway. I followed him wherever he went, allowing him to lead me as we cruised back into town. I heard the screams of women and men alike as we hit the main road. I picked up the gas pedal and pressed it down again, gaining speed on Hudson’s tail as he propelled himself forward. I’d never seen an animal run that fast in all of my life. But then again, they weren’t strictly animals.

Scratch that, we weren’t strictly animals.

But as we came upon the pack sign welcoming adventurers into our lovely little town, I skidded the car to a grinding halt.

Before hitting a patch of wetness that slid the car off to the side.

“Hold on, I’ll stop the car,” Hudson said inside of my head.

He leaned against my skidding car and quickly brought it to a stop. I threw the door open, trying to stomach the overwhelming smell of death and destruction as I looked upon the ground. The wetness that had pooled in the middle of the road didn’t reflect the stars above. It was nothing but black, as if someone had left a hole right in the middle of the road. I crouched down and dipped my fingers into it, trying to figure out what the hell it was.

But the second its warmth penetrated my skin, I recoiled.

“Blood,” I murmured.

“We can’t take all of them on.”

“Where’s Brody? Isn’t he supposed to be helping us?”

“Where’s our alpha? Where’s Raven?”

“Why has she abandoned us?”

The thought made me sick to my stomach. “All right, everyone. Can you hear me?”

“Alpha!”

“She’s here!”

“Long live our Alpha!”

“Tell us what to do, Alpha. All we need are instructions.”

Hudson stalked around me, as if he were protecting me from threats I couldn’t see with my human eyes. It felt like chains had been wrapped around my wrists. Chains that kept weighing me down as my legs shook with the strength it took just to stand in the middle of that fucking road. I didn’t know what to do. I didn’t know why I felt the way that I did.

“Let me show you,” Hudson said as he nuzzled his face against my cheek.

My head snapped back and a vision overcame me. I saw my father, standing in the middle of a bloodstained field with his hands balled up into fists. He was shirtless, the sweat that poured down his body making him glisten in the summer sun. Veins bulged from every part of his body. It looked like he was being tortured. But the second his gaze locked with mine, he shifted into his wolf form.

Before I heard his voice echo around inside of my head.

“The chains of the pack start and end with you.”

Just as quickly as the vision had come on, it faded away, and I heard a thunderous rumbling off in the distance. I reached out for Hudson and gripped onto his black coat of fur as he turned me in the direction of the sound. My eyes widened as I watched trees on the side of the mountain get tackled to the ground. They were no bigger than broccoli crowns, and yet they looked as if they were being bulldozed over by a fucking freight train.
