“Yeah. I don’t have any other word other than that to describe it.”

I squirted some shampoo into my hand. “Well, just know we’re in agreement.”

“Uh, uh, uh. Here. Let me help you out.”

I’d never had my hair washed by anyone before. At least, not that I could remember. Dean scraped the shampoo out of my hands and had me turn around, and the second his hands slid into the wet tendrils of my hair, I was putty in his hands. He massaged the suds into my scalp. He rubbed my hair between his palms, sending shockwaves of shivers down my spine. I closed my eyes and allowed his guidance to transport me as he eased me back beneath the hot water, washing the shampoo away.

“Mmm, I could do this all afternoon,” I murmured.

Dean chuckled as the sound of something squirting filled my ears. “Trust me, you’re not alone in that wish.”

I peeked an eye open. “When we’re done cleaning ourselves off, I need you to go out and help the women. The longer those carcasses are out there, the more of a risk we take with our pups seeing those bodies well before they’re ready to process what’s happened.”

He slid the conditioner into my hair. “Your command is my life force, alpha.”

“Can I ask you a question while you’re doing that?”

He slid the conditioner down to the ends of my locks. “Of course. What’s on your mind, beautiful?”

I smiled softly. “When the healer said that wolves can heal, do you mean just—”

“Are you familiar with Wolverine?”

I peeked an eye open. “Seriously?”

He nodded. “Close your eyes, it’s time to rinse this out.”

I stepped back beneath the water. “You mean, someone cuts you and your skin just… zips back up.”

He chuckled. “Essentially.”

“And healers can use the calories they carry around in their fat stores to… heal wolves from more serious injuries?”

“That’s correct.”

“And that happens with all wolf shifters?”

“Yes. It’s something that’s ingrained into our DNA. Every wolf pack I’ve ever come across in my lifetime has that capability.”

I paused. “Do you know how that magic works?”

He ran a washcloth along my shoulders. “There are powers we are gifted with, like my visions or Hudson’s memory control, and then there are powers that are innate. Powers that are passed through our blood, and not through our minds. Powers that we all share, like the healing.”

“And the group-think.”

“Exactly. It’s ingrained into us, like how some humans are born with brown eyes. It just… is. It’s part of us. A characteristic of being a wolf.”

I allowed my mind to wander as he washed down the rest of my body. And after the suds were rinsed from my skin…

“I need to head back into Portland.”

Dean snatched my wrist. “You’re leaving? Again?”

I looked up into his panicked face. “Not for the airport, Dean. I’m not going there.”

His grip loosened a bit. “Do you need someone to accompany you to Portland, then? It would be safer if you went with someone.”

I shook my head as I took his hand in mine. “I need you guys here helping the pack. But I could use a name.”
