I pick her up, carrying her in my arms.

“Oh Caspian…” She mutters.

I feel such immense joy that she is alive, but I wish that she would preserve her energy. We will have an eternity to talk. Now, she needs to rest.

“Oh Caspian…”

The weight of the chains falls off me and a sense of relief replaces it. Caspian has found me and saved me from a horrible fate. I look up at his handsome angular face and watch the anger and fury morph into concern as he looks back.

As the relief fills my head, I lose my place in the world. These bad guys who took me flee as Rory and Caspian’s friend chase after them, but I can’t focus on what’s actually happening. Caspian says some words to me and I think I say some back, but what I don’t know. I’m just so happy to be reunited with Caspian and leave this whole ordeal in the past.

I’m brought back by the shock of Caspian’s touch. His icy cool arms wrap around me and hold me close to his just as chilly chest. For the briefest of moments, I know that I’m truly safe with him.

“Let’s get you out of here.” Caspian’s voice is as soft as I’ve ever heard it.

I weakly wrap my arm around Caspian’s neck to help support myself, but I don’t think he needs it. His big arms effortlessly lift me up off the ground. If I’ve learned anything today it’s to never underestimate that vampire strength.

Caspian carries me out of the lair and I instantly feel the warmth of sunlight on my skin. Damn, I wonder how long I was captive for. But that doesn’t matter now, I bask in that light and my new freedom.

A good distance away from the lair, Caspian sets me down. He grabs my right arm, and slowly starts to inspect it. Luckily, he came to save me before my capturers had the time to hurt me too much.

“This shall never happen again,” he mutters. Caspian moves to my other arm. His fingers linger on the marks where the chains dug into my skin.

“I’m fine Caspian. I promise.” I place my free hand under his chin and softly guide his face to look at me. “Thanks to you.”

“But it should’ve never happened in the first place. You should’ve never been in this situation. I should’ve seen to that.” His face pulls away from my touch and Caspian continues his inspection of my body.

If we weren’t in walking distance of the dead bodies of all the people who just kidnapped me, I might find this moment romantic. His golden eyes scan every inch of my body, lingering on any marks and blemishes. Taking great care to inspect any places my clothes have been torn or dirt rests on my skin.

Caspian’s run along my whole body. Tracing every bump and curve. Making sure there is nothing new from our last night together.

“No one…” Caspian whispers in my ear. “No one will ever touch what’s mine, ever again.”

His inspection ends at the marks he gave me. The bite on my neck and the scratch just below it. His fingers brush them and a warmth extends through my body despite his cool touch.

“Are you sure, you’re fine?” His golden eyes meet mine.

“I am.”

“Can you walk? We should find Rory and Ren.”

“No…” I probably can. But honestly, I want to feel him carry me some more. I want to bury my face into his body until we’re far away from this place.

Caspian doesn’t question me for a second. His arms scoop me off the ground and we’re off. In search of our friends.

The search doesn’t take long. Rory and Ren both returned to the lair after hunting down the fleeing bad guys. At first glance at me, Rory rushes over.

“Quinn! Quinn! Are you okay?” She stops right in front of Caspian, ignoring him, and holds my hand.

“I’m fine. A little tired. But fine.”

I push myself deeper against Caspian. The cool touch of his body against mine is very calming. Despite how much of my attraction to him is based on the danger he represents, I feel very safe in this moment.

For me, at least, the relationship between us has moved past being just a fling. He’s no longer just my stalker leaving me gifts in the night. I don’t know how he feels, but it’s become very clear that Caspian is so much more to me.
