“Crap,” Rory says. “I was hoping that was a filler episode!”

“Nope. Somebody dies in every episode. That’s the whole premise.”

I turn the TV off, and I’m silent as we take in the room.

“I need to get some water,” she says. “This popcorn is kicking my ass.”

“I have milk in the fridge,” I propose.

“You’re a lifesaver,” she replies, grabbing a cup from the cabinet.

I gulp. I’m not wearing my ring, because I don’t want to give it away yet, but she’s going to have to find out eventually. It’s the entire reason I asked her over.

I pull the bright red diamond ring out of my pocket, and as she walks over with the glass of milk in her hand, I intercept her.

“What’s up?” She asks.

I hold the ring up for her to see, expecting the worst. I know how much she dislikes Caspian - how much she feared for my life, and told me not to see him. She probably thinks I’m locking myself into an abusive relationship with a man who will kill me one day, and from the outside, yeah, I could kind of see her point.

“Oh! He proposed to you?”

She finally pieces it together, moving back to the couch and out of my way. She continues snacking on the habanero popcorn, even though her face is already bright red from devouring it.

I’m surprised by the utter lack of reaction.

“That’s awesome!” She exclaims.

“Yeah…”

I’m not sure what to say. Why isn’t she angrier about this? Doesn’t she care about me?

“Why aren’t you yelling at me?” I ask her. “Before the mission, the mere mention of Caspian sent you into hysterics.”

“I’m sorry about that,” she says. “To tell you the truth, I was kind of hoping he’d be here.”

“So that you could yell at him?”

“So that I could apologize to him. I haven’t gotten to thank him since we rescued you, and I know I didn’t exactly give him a fair shake of things.”

I can’t hide my confusion from my face.

“What happened to this being exactly like your mom’s abusive relationship? What happened to being afraid he’ll murder me and drain me like one of the Moonlight Sentinels?”

“He’s had every opportunity to do something terrible, in spite of my protests, and he hasn’t,” Rory counters. “Plus, it’s not like he couldn’t have killed you when you were helpless amd chained up or something. Only thing stopping him is I would have gutted him in the worst possible way.”

“Wow,” I say. “That’s pretty morbid.”

“It’s the truth.”

“So you’re happy for me then?”

I think back to when she did everything in her power to keep me from him - even installing a protection spell without asking. Things have changed tremendously these past several weeks.

She looks confused.

“Did I not already say that?” She asks. “I thought I told you that when I sat down.”

“Okay, so you’re not happy, but you’re not exactly over the moon either,” I reply.
