I stare at him, trying to decide if I’m signing my own death warrant.

I hate just how drawn I am to him. The only way this can work is if I don’t feel anything for him at all. I have to lay down ground rules, if just to protect me from myself.

“We’re not complicating this with anything else,” I inform him. "Nothing happens between us. No sex, no kissing, no touching. We’re done pretending there’s something here when there isn’t.”

He barely blinks. “Agreed.”

“I hope you have a plan.”

His smile is cold enough to freeze my soul. “I do.”

Chapter Six

The problem with saying you have a plan when you actually don’t is figuring out what the hell you’re going to do next.

By the time I get back to Havoc House, the cat is out of the bag about Vaughn being in the hospital.

Nolan sees me first when I walk in.

“Where the hell have you been?” he demands.

Making plans with our sworn enemy, what else? “None of your damn business.”

I try to brush past him, but he grabs my arm. “What’s going on with you, man?”

“Nothing.”

But he doesn’t let go. “Well, you need to pay attention. Vaughn is in the hospital.”

I stop short. Obviously, I already knew that Vaughn was in the hospital, but I didn’t think Nolan would find out this quickly. “What happened?”

“Car accident, or something.” Nolan gives me a strange look, probably because I’ve let more dismay than surprise show in my expression. “His dad called me.”

“I’m surprised he didn’t call me.”

“He said that he couldn’t get hold of you.”

There’s a question in Nolan’s tone that I choose to ignore.

My phone has been turned off for most of the day. The last thing I wanted was for my father to track my movements. “That’s weird.”

“It is.”

There is a long pause as I try and fail to respond normally. “Is Vaughn going to be okay?”

“Sounds like it. His dad said we need to make sure that Vaughn doesn’t miss the Initiation.” Nolan gives a dry chuckle. “Assuming he lives, and all.”

Even with his son in the hospital, Vaughn’s father would be more concerned about what the event meant for Havoc House than the details of his son’s condition.

“Mr. Ashbridge always seemed like the sentimental type.”

Nolan pushes me toward the door. “Everyone is already at the hospital. Let’s go, I’m driving.”

I briefly consider refusing, but I know how that would look.

If this is going to work, then I’m going to have to play along.

Nolan doesn’t hurry as we head for the parking lot. He whistles as he tosses his keys up into the air and catches them.
