“You seem upbeat considering the circumstances,” I note dryly.

Nolan’s Audi is parked in a space meant for the school provost. A ballsy move, even for him. The staff must have all already left for break if the car hasn’t been towed.

There isn’t anyone left on campus, but us.

Nolan unlocks the car and collapses into the driver’s seat. He strokes the leather gearshift and sighs in pleasure before starting the engine.

I cut him an unhappy look when he starts blasting Taylor Swift. “Seriously?”

Nolan opens his mouth and belts out the chorus. “Look what you made me do…”

“Jesus Christ.”

“Don’t hate, appreciate. Everybody likes my girl, Taylor.” His gaze slides over me as he backs out of the spot. “I think something might have literally crawled up your ass. I haven’t seen you this dour since freshman year when the seniors put us through hell. God damn, pledge year sucked.”

I don’t like the reminder. Nobody seems to have noticed, but Havoc House has been a kinder, gentler thing under my leadership. Our current pledge class has no idea how good they have it compared to what some of us went through.

My hands grip the door as Nolan takes a hairpin turn out of the parking lot at forty miles an hour. “Why don’t you focus on not putting us in the hospital? Unless you want to share a room with Vaughn.”

“Don’t be such a baby.” Nolan laughs derisively. “It’s not like the guy is dying. This is his own fault for being dumb enough to wrap his car around a tree.”

“You’re all heart.”

“Dude is going to be fine. His dad has already talked to him.”

Vaughn is awake.

Fuck.

On the one hand, I’m happy that my closest friend is conscious and recovering.

On the other, I’m more than a little worried about what he might say under the influence of pain medication.

“Did Brady go to the hospital?”

Nolan looks surprised I would ask. “Of course.”

Double fuck.

I’m tense for the rest of the ride.

Evangeline isn’t supposed to be discharged until tomorrow. I hope she has the sense to not go wandering around the hospital. For right now, we need everyone to think that she is entirely out of the picture.

Brady probably won’t try to suffocate Vaughn with a pillow or something with all these witnesses around.

The nurse, thankfully a different one than before, rolls her eyes as we approach the desk. “There are more of you?”

Brady sticks his head out from behind a curtain. “We’re over here.”

“We have a visitor limit,” the nurse calls out, sounding more than a little aggrieved.

“Don’t worry about it,” Brady murmurs as he holds the curtain open for us. “I gave her a hundred to keep her mouth shut. We’ll be good until the shift changes.”

Vaughn has been moved to a different room. This one is further from the nurse’s station, which is probably a good sign.

Cole sits in the only chair. He has it pulled up to the head of the bed and straddles it with the seat facing backwards. He glances back at us with raised eyebrows. “You’ve got to listen to this shit.”

Vaughn is wide awake and laughing like a hyena on nitrous oxide.
