Shaking the thought, I located our target at the entrance, surveying the crowd before heading in the opposite direction. I let Mack and Ty know I would be back before making my way down the stairs. Keeping a safe distance, a manicured hand tugged at my shirt, causing me to pause my stride. I looked up, and there she was.

"Hey baby, I've been looking for you," The brown-skinned beauty from earlier forced a smile with a glazed look of desperation. Likely because she was pinned in the corner by a nigga I'd never seen before.

She threw her arms around my neck before cupping my face and whispered, "Please help me," I pulled away to catch a peak of her misty and wistful eyes. She stared back, half in anticipation and half in dread. I cleared my throat, pretending not to be affected, and swiped the remnants of our kiss from my lips.

"Baby? This your nigga now?" he snarled, visibly upset to see her kissing someone else.

"Yeah, and I'm the wrong one to piss off too," I spoke, roping my arm around her shoulder, safely tucking her at my side. Oddly it felt natural until my eyes fell on his hand, still clinging to her wrist. "If you want to keep that hand, I suggest you tuck that bitch in your pocket or something."

He finally heeded my warning, but he damn sure wasn't happy about it as he kissed his teeth, "I see you, acting all heartbroken and shit, but you're fucking with somebody else."

"I'm not your problem anymore, Marcel. You made that very clear. I have bigger and better things to do." Lacing her fingers inside mine, she pulled in the opposite direction.

We reached the terrace, and I immediately dropped her hand in need of an explanation. Her face filled with momentary panic as she waited for me to take the first step. She was too nervous to explain, so I asked.

"What the fuck was that?" She jumped so hard that a hiccup escaped her lips. Just because she was beautiful didn't give her a pass to slip her tongue in my mouth. I didn't play those games.

"I-I-I needed to get away from him, a-and you're the scariest man I've seen all night," she struggled, giving the ground more contact than my face. She became increasingly uneasy under my scrutiny. The way she stammered, I figured it had less to do with respect than the nerves racing through her for putting her lips on me without permission.

"So you decided it was smart to put your tongue down the scariest nigga's throat?"

A flash of confidence appeared, pretending to be irked by my calm yet cold demeanor. "You helped, didn't you?"

As quickly as it appeared, her confidence vanished again the longer my orbs devoured her. She was so goddamn gorgeous that I imagined a woman like her would be used to the attention, but her body language told me otherwise.

"I don't put my hands on women, and I don't fuck with nigga's who do."

"If someone kissed me in the mouth, I'd be pissed too." Her neutral expression mushroomed into disgust. "I didn't know what else to do. I'm sorry."

"You should be," I chuckled, leaning against the brick enclosure and folding my arms across my chest.

"Whatever."

"What's your name?"

"Hailo, but my friends call me Lo. We're not friends, but I've already stuck my tongue in your mouth, so I guess it's fair," she shrugged, hugging herself.

The perfect name for an angel.

Hailo didn't notice my orbs studying her wavy hair pulled up that put her triangle face and full lips on display to her perfectly even brown skin.

"I did something for you. Now I need you to do something for me," I spoke up, clearing the lust from my throat before she picked up on it.

"Excuse me?" Hailo quipped, rolling her neck with hiked eyebrows.

"Although this dress had my mind wondering shit, it shouldn’t.” I scanned her critically and beamed in approval. “It's nothing like that. Relax.”

"I don't even know your name," I paused, wondering if Hailo was playing a game to win my attention or if she had no idea who I was. It wasn't often that I ran into a woman that didn't, so I was curious.

"Only my friends get that information. So, are you a friend?"

"It depends. What do you need?"

"Have fun tonight with your man since you've been looking for me all night. You look like you need it." She smiled, unlike the fearful one she delivered in front of Marcel or the awkward one while I watched her on the dance floor. It was genuine and looked damn good on her as she stood amused at me, referencing the game she started in front of him. "Let me be your baby tonight."

"That's it?"

"That's it," I repeated while she stared, skeptical of my intentions, but I was a man of my word. I didn’t want anything from Hailo other than replacing the sorrow in her eyes with happiness.
