“I’ll show you where it is,” Hailo volunteered, offering Cam her hand as they strode down the hall.

Admiring Serenity, I wanted another baby. One day. Not anytime soon because Camdyn was a handful. I wanted to know what it felt like to be doted on and spoiled throughout my pregnancy. I spent so much of my previous one crying and stressed behind Marcus that I felt robbed of the experience.

“Mack!” Cam erupted, and my heart sank as I turned around.

I heard the door open, but I didn’t expect Mack to walk through it. He scooped Camdyn in his arms as Hailo walked back into the living room.

“You set me up!” I whispered.

“I didn’t, I swear,” she maintained, throwing her hand up as if under oath while my lips quirked. “Hey, Mack.”

“Wassup,” he walked into the living room, being pulled by Cam. “Sup Sky.”

I smiled and waved, not because I didn’t want to speak. I was mesmerized. I could tell from the redness along Mack’s hairline and beard that he’d just gotten a haircut. Despite being just as tall, he didn’t possess an athletic build like Gianni and Tyson. Mack was like a muscular teddy bear- physically and figuratively.

I heard the way women talked about Mack. They hated his laid-back demeanor, but it was one of the things that turned me on the most. Probably because he could let his guard down with me, it made me feel special that I knew him in ways that most people- specifically women didn’t.

“What are you doing here?” Hailo asked.

“Damn, I didn’t know I needed a reason to visit my sister.”

“Negro, you are not here for me, and you know it.”

“Not today. I have to get something from Gi. Where is he?”

“In the basement, I think.”

“Cool. I’ll see you later, Cam Cam,” Mack shifted his attention to the miniature version of me that hadn’t left his side.

“Later when? Will it be a long time?” Cam wasn’t letting up, and it made me nervous.

“I don’t know.”

“That’s what mommy says whenever I ask if you’re coming over,” Cam tooted her lips in disappointment. He stole a glance at me before squatting down to her level.

“Oh yeah? You’ve been asking about me?”

“Yup!”

“You can call me anytime you want to talk, okay?”

“Okay!” Satisfied, Camdyn fell back in the spot she had been previously watching Gracie’s corner while I was annoyed.

I loved the patience and concern he showed Camdyn. It was the same care he gave to me. I wanted it so badly for the both of us, but Meraux’s lived by different rules.

“Don’t be a hater. Let my homie call me if she wants to.”

“We talked about this,” I reminded him, but I needed it also. It was hard standing strong and doing what I knew was right instead of what I wanted.

“Do you have a date yet for the gala?” Hailo asked, wearing a mischievous grin.

“Nah, I had one in mind, but she ain’t fucking with me right now.”

“What about Sky? You’re not doing anything next weekend, are you?” Hailo asked, turning to me with a mischievous smile.

“I have work and Camdyn. Plus, it’s too short notice.”

“Minor details,” Hailo brushed off my response, “Please don’t leave me at my first event with no companion. Besides, Mack will look pitiful showing up by himself.” Hailo’s grin transformed into a broad smile. “Please.”
