“I don’t have a sitter.”

“That’s an easy fix,” Mack added his two cents.

“How? I don’t leave my child with just anybody.”

“You don’t think I know that?” Mack snapped back, likely annoyed that I was challenging him where Cam was concerned.

“It’s settled! We can go shopping tomorrow.”

“Hailo,” I sighed, bulging my eyes for her to let it go.

“Let me know what we’re wearing tomorrow so I can match,” Mack kissed my cheek and tickled Camdyn’s stomach on his way out of the living room.

Hailo pretended she didn’t see me staring at her as I waited for Mack to get out of earshot. “Really bitch!” I seethed before I realized what I had said. Hailo had a way of making you feel comfortable despite not knowing each other that well. “I don’t know if we’ve reached that point yet, but you deserve it!” I fussed, throwing a pillow at Hailo.

“A thank you would be nice.”

“And what exactly should I be thanking you for?”

“Helping you guys make up.”

“I know you’re new to DuPont Falls, but Meraux’s have different rules than the rest of us.”

“Like getting married to your one-night stand because she’s pregnant,” Hailo replied, and my jaw dropped at how bluntly she put their situation. There had been rumors about where Hailo came from because women were angry that Gianni was officially off the market. One moment, he was madly in love with Kyerra, and the next, he had a new woman and a new baby. “Believe me. I know all about DuPont Falls rules.”

“Damn, that’s crazy.”

“Tell me about it. At the time, it felt insane. I thought he was joking when he told me, but it turned out to be the one thing I didn’t know I needed. I love Gianni,” she shared, and by the confused look on her face, it seemed it wasn’t until this moment that Hailo realized that. “So sometimes the thing that seems scary is exactly what you need.”

“It’s not me that’s holding us back. I have a child that’s not his. Rules are rules.”

“Hmm, sounds to me like you’re scared and hiding behind an outdated rule made by some hating ass hoe. What did Mack say?”

“Nothing, really. I told him it was best we stop since we couldn’t be together, and he agreed.”

“Men are stupid. He didn’t mean it, and you know it. Mack is simple. He probably didn’t want to argue about it.”

“Doesn’t matter now because you just pimped me out to be his date.”

“Oh please, not everything is about the men. This was about me not wanting to attend this damn event alone, but if you and Mack make up in the process, we all win,” Hailo grinned.

“I’m not hanging with you anymore. You’re trouble.”

“Just a little bit.” Shaking my head, I was nervous about attending such a popular event with him.

It would bring unnecessary attention that I didn’t need or want. Not intentionally, but everybody would talk about Macklin Meraux showing up with the single mother.

“Hey Mack,” Hailo answered the door, surprised because she likely assumed I was here for Gi, but it was the opposite. This visit was all about her.

“Wassup. What are you doing?”

“Nothing.”

“Come have lunch with me,” I suggested, and she squinted, trying to figure out why.

“Is everything okay?”

“Damn, I didn’t know I needed a reason to hang out with my sister.”
