“Thank you so much for all your help. Just charge it to my account, and my dad will handle it. Thank you, Nadine,” Solana rattled off before finishing another glass of champagne. She’d had so many that I had lost count.

Nadine returned to the register and began typing while we gathered our belongings. Before we could get out the door, she called out to Solana. “Can I talk to you for a second?”

“Sure, what’s up.”

“In private,” Nadine’s eyes skirted to Sky and me before focusing back on Solana.

“Just say it, Nadine,” Solana nervously chuckled.

“Your father hasn’t covered your account in two months. This isn’t like him, but I have to say something.”

Solana chuckled at the idea of money being a problem for a Meraux, “Are you sure? You might need to check again.”

“I thought the same thing, so I did.”

“And?”

“And the balance hasn’t been covered in months,” Nadine replied, carefully choosing her words not to offend Solana.

She was desperately trying to hold it together. I had reservations about Solana, but I couldn’t watch her stand here and suffer.

“Here, this should cover it,” I handed Nadine the credit card Gianni gave me, hoping it would.

If her father is having money issues is Gianni too. Is that why he was never home? Panic began to set in, wondering how I would take care of Serenity if he were. If Gianni had given me a credit card, why didn’t Solana have one too? Or did this bitch play me to spend my money and not hers.

“Thank you, Mrs. Meraux.” Nadine returned, handing over my card.

Solana rolled her eyes, walked out of the store, and immediately dialed her father.

“Please tell me stuff like this doesn’t happen often,” I whispered before we reached Solana.

“Often? Shit, a Meraux with money problems is rarer than a virgin prostitute.”

“Thank you. It slipped his mind, but he’s going to take care of it,” Solana informed us, and I nodded. “I’m starving. Do you guys want to get something to eat?” she offered.

Sky hesitated checking her phone, “I don’t know. I have to pick up Cam before six.”

“It’s still early. We have plenty of time for a few drinks.” Solana eagerly shifted to me, hoping I would help persuade Sky. “Besides, as busy as everybody has been, I’m sure you’re tired of sitting in the house alone. It’ll be fun.”

I was, and something told me Solana felt the same. It didn’t seem like the Meraux women had much going on, giving them a lot of free time. I didn’t do well with free time, maybe because I wasn’t familiar with it.

“I’m down,” I spoke up, and Skylar agreed.

Solana skirted to her car, leaving us no choice but to climb in mine and follow. Ironically I had more fun than I thought I would. It felt good to get out of the house. I loved my little family, but I missed Hailo as a woman. Today I got to enjoy her, even if for a few hours.

Gianni volunteered to pick up Serenity and warned me to call him if I got too drunk instead of driving myself home. We sat and talked long enough that the alcohol flushed from my system before I dropped Skylar off. When I got home, Gianni was lying across the living room floor while Serenity was on her blanket. Gi was focused on the television while her dark brown eyes were locked on the rattle in his hand.

“Hey you,” I leaned down and kissed him.

“If I knew you would get that drunk, I would’ve left Serenity with my parents,” he flirted tasting the alcohol on my breath.

“You’re such a whore.”

“I’m a married man. I’m allowed to be,” I bit my lip at how he loved me out loud. I had never witnessed a man glorify marriage the way Gianni did. It was sexy, and as much as I missed my Tater Tot, her spending the night at her grandparents didn’t sound too bad.

“Were you able to find a dress?”

“I did.”
