“Fine, Macklen,” I was exhausted and wanted to see my baby.

“Stop reminding me you have a kid like I haven’t been holding shit down, Sky. I know who and what comes with you. I’m not trippin’ off Cam, so you shouldn’t be either.” He bit his bottom lip as he plucked my thigh to express his frustration.

“It’s only been a few days, and it sounds like Lo has been doing the bulk of the work,” I teased.

“Being held up in the hospital with you because you wanted a nap was hard work.”

“You could’ve left.”

“Could’ve, but it was nowhere else I wanted to be,” He winked, focusing back on the road.

We arrived at my apartment, and Mack did most of the packing. He didn’t want me to lift a finger, so my only job was pointing out what I wanted to take with us. My sister bolted through the door during one of his trips to the car.

“Oh, my God! I have been worried sick about you!”

“I’m okay.”

“That bandage says otherwise. I heard you got shot. I called every hospital and got nothing.” Tamia rattled off as Mack entered the apartment. “Now I know why. I guess he had the hospital under lock and key.”

My eyes skirted to Mack, and he shrugged his shoulders, walking around me, “I couldn’t take any risks. I’ll let y’all have a minute.”

Mack grabbed the last bag and headed outside. Tamia waited until the door shut before whispering, “What the hell is going on? Where are you going?”

“Mack wants us to stay with him for a little while. Until things are safe.”

“He’s a Meraux, Skylar. Is it ever really going to be safe?”

“I don’t know. I hope so.”

“I hope you know what you’re doing because it looks like seeing a burning building and still walking into it.”

“What is that supposed to mean?”

“It means you know the two of you can’t be together, but for some odd reason, you’re moving yourself and your child into this man’s home. It doesn’t make sense, Skylar. Why would you do that to yourself and Camdyn?”

“This coming from the woman who gave her to Marcus?” I fired back with a raised brow.

“He’s her father. That’s different.”

“It’s not all that different.”

“Mom is worried about you,” Tamia shared, changing the subject.

“Why would she be worried about me?”

“She is your mother,” Tamia replied before her eyes met the ground. “She wants to see you and Camdyn.”

“Why would you do that?”

“I was worried sick! Everybody was saying it was you that got shot. Then you and Cam disappeared off the face of the earth for days. What else was I supposed to do?”

Closing my eyes, I inhaled deeply, trying not to personalize Tamia’s actions. I often disagreed with her decisions, but my sister wasn’t malicious. She is impulsive, rarely thinking things through or considering the aftermath of her choices.

“I’m sorry you were worried, but I’m okay, and Cam is safe. Mom doesn’t need to schedule some dramatic meeting.”

The door opened, cutting our conversation short. “Cam Cam called. She’s not happy we’re taking so long,” Mack shared, causing me to shake my head.

“You might work for Camdyn, but I don’t.”
