“I do, and I’m not trying to get fired. She’s a strict boss. You’re welcome over any time, Tamia.”

“Thanks because I’d like to see Cam soon. I miss the little squirt.”

“We can set something up,” I offered because Tamia was one of Cam’s favorite people. I’m sure she missed her too.

“Please answer my calls and texts when I check on you.”

“Yes, ma’am.”

I did a quick walk-through to ensure we had what we needed, at least for now. I hugged Tamia and climbed into the car with Mack to finally see my baby. The closer we drove to Gi and Hailo’s house, the more nervous I became. I couldn’t even pinpoint why. Maybe I was just anxious to put my eyes on Camdyn after everything.

We pulled into the driveway, and Mack opened the door like the gentleman he was. He didn’t bother ringing the bell because everybody was expecting us, including Cam. She bolted down the hallway, and her eyes grew to the size of balloons.

“Mommy, I missed you so much! Where have you been?” Camdyn rushed, wrapping her legs around my body. Tears welled in my eyes because there was a time when I never thought I would see my baby again.

Mack volunteered to explain because I was still choked up, “I told you Mommy wasn’t feeling well.”

“Is that why you have a band-aide?” She asked, pointing to the bandage just below my shoulder. By now, Hailo had joined us in the foyer, just as happy to see me as Camdyn was.

“Yup, but I’m so happy to see you!”

“I’m happy too.”

“You’re going to come to stay at my house for a little while. Is that okay?” Mack asked, even though she was going whether she liked it or not. The sentiment that he cared about how she felt warmed my heart despite him giving me an order.

“Is mommy coming too?”

“Of course,” I added.

“Okay.”

“Let’s go get your stuff so we can go.” Mack offered his hand to Camdyn, who obliged. She refused to turn the corner without looking back to ensure I was still there.

“Girl am I happy to see you,” Hailo grinned, leaning in for a soft hug, “I don’t appreciate you trying to leave me with all these crazy ass people either.”

“What the hell happened?” I whispered because Mack refused to talk about it. I asked, but he’d only given me vague answers that left me more curious.

Hailo looked over her shoulder before pulling me into the living room. “They don’t know. At least not yet.”

“I thought nobody was crazy enough to go against them, especially in their city.”

“Well, you know what they say? There’s always somebody crazier than you,” Hailo shrugged.

“Thank you for looking after Cam. I know you have a lot-.”

Hailo rolled her eyes, waving off my speech before I finished. “That’s what family does for each other. Judging by how Mack locked himself in the hospital, you’re family now.”

“Thanks, Lo.”

“You’re welcome. I’m just glad you’re okay. You were a friend to me when you didn’t have to be. It was the least I could do.”

“I’m ready!” Cam exclaimed, running around the corner and forcing me to swallow the tears Hailo’s words created. I didn’t have a lot of genuine people in my life, but I was thankful for her.

“Slow down before you hurt yourself.”

“Ready?” Mack asked.

“Yeah, I’m getting tired.”
