“I appreciate you, Lo.”

“You’re welcome. I’m glad my girl is awake. I’m tired of fighting you to leave the hospital to wash your ass.”

Mack chuckled, pulling her in for a hug before picking up Cam’s bags. The three of us headed back to his home. He volunteered to settle Cam, but I needed to speak with her alone. After a guided tour, he let her pick which bedroom she wanted to stay in. Of course, she opted for the yellow bedroom because it was her favorite color.

“I missed you.”

“I miss you too, mommy.”

“Are you going to be scared in here by yourself?” I asked. She slept alone in her bedroom at home, but Mack’s was much bigger than our two-bedroom apartment.

“Can I leave the TV on?”

The answer to that at home was no. Cam knew that, but I’d oblige her until she adjusted. “Yes, but you’ll have to learn to sleep without it like a big girl.”

“I am a big girl.”

“Yes, you are.”

“Is this our new house?”

“No. We’re just having a sleepover for a few days. Then we’ll go back to our house.” I explained the best way I could. “ I heard you were a big help with Serenity.”

“I was. I made her laugh.”

“Because you’re awesome!” I smiled, opening my arms, and she collapsed inside. The force hurt my chest a little, but I’d bear the pain to feel her arms wrapped around my neck.

I turned on a movie and reminded her I’d be across the hall. Mack was lying on the edge of the bed with one leg hanging off. He looked so good that he had me thinking about things I shouldn’t have been, but it was hard not to. Mack checked off every box to the point that I feared getting to know him more. Everybody had something wrong with them, and I wondered why Macklen Meraux and all his greatness weren’t claimed.

“Don’t ever be scared to ask a nigga anything, especially if you’re fucking him,” Mack casually replied to all the thoughts in my head even though I hadn’t uttered a word.

“I haven’t had sex with you in a while, so I don’t know if I’m allowed to ask.”

“You’re here, so you can ask me whatever you want,” he replied, referring to his home.

Mack chuckled, watching me climb onto his king-size bed, much taller than I was used to. “What’s wrong with you?” I asked, pulling my ankle into my body.

“What?”

“Relationship wise. Everybody has something, so what’s wrong with you?”

“I know what’s wrong with you,” he replied, and I was taken aback by his brash response. “You don’t know how to let go and trust people. The last time you did, you ended up pregnant with Cam alone, so now you side-eye every nigga that wants to make you happy.”

“If I’m all that, why am I here?” I replied defensively, and he smirked.

“It’s far worst shit you could bring to the table, Sky. I am who I say I am, so I’m not tripping off that shit. For now,” Mack made sure to point out. “In time, you’ll learn you can trust me because I do what I say I’m going to do. Ten years later, if you’re still on that bullshit, I might have to take Cam and leave your ass.”

“Take Cam?” I stifled a laugh so loud I threw my hand over my mouth.

“She’d wanna live with me anyway. I’m the fun parent.”

My cheeks were sputtering out of control at the way he saw our life ten years down the road. Not only did he intend to be in my life, but Cam’s too. That meant a lot.

“You’re so annoying.”

“Come here.”

“You didn’t answer my question.”
