“Maybe some traditions need to be re-evaluated.”

“Thanks, mom.”

“For what it’s worth, I like Sky. Children are a big responsibility, Macklen. It’s not something to take lightly. Choosing Sky means choosing Cam too.”

“I know, mama.”

“Okay,” she smiled, pulling me in for a hug. “Cam is adorable.”

I was a grown-ass man who didn’t need his mother’s approval, but it felt good to have it anyway. Tyson’s news killed the momentum of dinner, so I rounded up Sky and Cam so we could head home.

“Macklen,” My father’s voice caught my attention before we walked out the door. “A word before you go.”

“I’ll be out in a second,” I kissed Skylar as she and Cam walked outside.

“I know you care about this woman, but have you considered what this means? For everyone.”

“Rules need to evolve with people. So yeah, I’m choosing Skylar and whatever comes with that,” I replied, making it clear that I was ready for whatever he and his brothers attempted to throw my way.

“There’s no changing your mind?”

“Not a chance.”

“Evolution leads to progress, but sometimes it doesn’t.”

“This time, it won’t,” I assured him, and though Everett disagreed, his shoulders relaxed, conceding to my decision.

“I hope you’re right, son. I’ll talk to your uncles. You look happy,” he observed, smiling.

“I am. I need to get Sky and Cam home.”

“A large part of being a parent is showing up even when you disagree. I love you, son.”

“I love you too.” My father and I shared an embrace before I joined Skylar and Cam in the car.

“Is everything okay?” Skylar asked.

“Yeah, we’re good.”

When I set my mind on something, it was not changing. Everett knew that, too so he decided to support my decision instead of waging war with his only child.

“Lo can you get the door,” Gianni yelled from the living room. I was in the middle of washing bottles while he was watching television.

“Sure, because I’m not doing anything,” I mumbled as I dried my hands.

Trekking to the door, I bit back the urge to say anything to Gianni. I have been heavily annoyed lately with everything and everybody. That’s when Sadie’s wise words came to mind.

Everybody can’t be getting on your nerves. If they are, you’re the problem.

Gianni did more than his fair share of helping with Serenity. I couldn’t have asked for a better husband and father. Lately, I have been missing home. I missed my mom and grandmother. My girls. I thought that hearing Gianni come home and tell me things were handled, I would feel better, but truthfully I was still shaken.

DuPont Falls had been nothing but chaos. Having Skylar in my life helped, but it still wasn’t the same. Pushing my feelings down, I pulled the door open, and my jaw dropped.

“Bitches get married, have a baby and forget all about us!” Denim wasted no time fussing as I let them inside.

“Let it go. I’ve listened to the shit all the way here,” Niyomi groaned, immediately going to the living room and taking Serenity from Gi.

“What are you guys doing here?”
