"She ain't going for it, so now what?" I didn't know that, but something told me Hailo would not be a willing participant.

"I'll have a conversation with her," My father assured me.

"Hailo knows you less than she knows me," I chuckled because my father had never been short on confidence. A trait my mother often said he passed down to me.

"Is there anything else you need to tell me?" My father asked, taking a seat behind his desk. This conversation ruined his plans with my mother tonight, and I couldn’t say I was sad about it. Yes, he was her husband, but I didn’t want to think about Xora getting fucked by anyone- him included.

"No.”

"Until we figure this out, I need you to keep it in your pants. The last thing we need is you making another baby with someone else," My father instructed.

“I got you.”

"A one-night stand with a woman you met at a club. You could've done better for yourself." He groaned as he massaged his temple. “This is who you’ve brought into the family and picked for your child.” Ross scolded as I shrugged.

Not because I didn't care or have my reservations on the subject because I did. I didn’t know Hailo enough to vouch for what type of mother she would be. I knew me, and regardless of what she lacked, my daughter would never go without. I’d put my life on that.

“I’m out. I’ll get at you later.”

“Go love on your mother before you leave. She’s losing her mind right now worrying about her baby.”

We decided to keep this between us until we knew if the baby was mine. Hauling to my feet, I walked to the living room to butter up my mother.

"There's my favorite girl."

“It’s that bad?” Xora placed her hand up to stop me from wrapping her in my arms.

“What are you talking about?”

“You’re buttering me up, which means it’s bad. What happened, Gianni?”

“Nothing you need to worry about,” I flashed my smile the same way I had been doing since a child and kissed her forehead.

"I know that’s a lie."

"So why did you ask? I hate lying,” I smiled, hoping she would do the same.

"Then you shouldn’t lie.”

"I'm going to see Kyerra. I'll see you later."

"Be safe, Gianni."

"Love you, mama." Kissing her cheek, I walked out of the house and climbed into the car.

I held it together in front of my family, but I was stressed and disappointed. I wasn't like most nigga's afraid of love. Having a front-row view of my parent's relationship made me want the same for myself one day.

One day.

Not today and not with a woman I barely knew so I could end up miserable like my aunt and uncle.

There wasn’t much I could do to fix the situation, but I wasn’t going to cower away and hide. That wasn’t me, so I let Kyerra know I was on my way. Once I parked, I quickly texted Hailo because whether I liked it or not, they were both my responsibility now.

Me: Y'all good?

Hailo: Yes, we're in bed.

Me: Good. I can't make it back tonight. I'll see you tomorrow.
