“Judging by how you look, I’ll take that as a no. What happened?”

“There’s a good chance you’re going to be a grandfather,” I shared because there was no easy way to say it.

Ross's mouth curved into a mischievous grin that likely didn’t want to believe my words. He also knew I would never lie about something of this magnitude, forcing him to pour himself a drink.

“What do you mean there’s a good chance? Is it your baby or not?”

"She says it’s mine, but until it’s official,” I hunched my shoulders, mulling over if I wanted to pour myself a drink too.

Ross's nostrils flared, irritated with the lack of context I provided, but it didn't seem necessary. Unless he were willing to break years of tradition to absolve my lapse in judgment, there was no point in telling him how Hailo’s pussy fit my dick like a glove sucking all common sense from my body that night.

I accepted the situation and the part I played in it, but marriage is where I drew the line. We weren’t in love, just two people caught up in lust.

“How long have you known about this?”

“I found out today. We met at a party and had sex, and I woke up the next morning, and she was gone. It was so crazy that I would’ve thought it was a dream if Mack and Ty weren’t there that night. Now she’s in DuPont Falls for work and six months pregnant with my daughter.”

“Six months,” Ross seethed, then it transitioned into a daunting chuckle as he walked back to the bar to refill his glass. “Six months, Gianni.”

“If she’s mine, I will take care of her.”

“That’s the least of your problems! This woman is potentially six months pregnant with a Meraux’s baby!” His frustrations won, causing his voice to elevate.

“Shit happened! We didn’t keep in touch for me to check weekly to see if she was pregnant.”

“Don’t be a wise ass at a time like this. I guess using a condom would’ve been too much like right.”

“What can I say? It was a wild night.” He thought I was being sarcastic, but that was the only way to explain my lapse in judgment. I was far from perfect but sliding in a female raw that I didn’t know wasn’t my style. Yet, I allowed Hailo to lower my defenses and forget who the fuck I was for a few hours.

“I hope you enjoyed it because it’ll be the last woman you have sex with. You know what you have to do now?" Ordinarily, it meant marriage, but I was praying for another option.

“No, I don’t.”

Ross was currently leaning against his desk with his palms planted. He lifted his head enough to shoot daggers in my direction. “Why are you always a pain in my ass?”

“It’s not like there’s somebody else around here to do it.” I pointed out. For whatever reason, Ross and Xora were one and done. That left me to fulfill the requirements of the favorite child and the troublemaker.

“Things need to move quickly since we’re already six months behind schedule.”

"Hailo isn’t from DuPont Falls. She doesn't know how this works."

"You do, and that baby is half yours, allegedly." His eyebrows bounced, probably praying otherwise.

"I don’t want to marry her, and she doesn’t want to marry me. I’ll handle my responsibility, but marriage isn’t happening. She’s not going to agree anyway.”

"You need to make her. She's carrying your heir. There's no other way, Gianni," His voice was more controlled than earlier in the conversation when I dropped a bomb on him.

"It is. You don't want to make that call,” I responded, putting my father on the hot seat.

His office fell silent as I awaited his reaction. He didn't immediately give one; instead, he allowed his scowl to linger before the left corner of his mouth cracked a smirk.

“Oh, I see. Because I’m your father, I’m supposed to bend the rules. Tradition and accountability don’t mean shit for Gianni Meraux,” The dramatic manner in which he said my name was filled with sarcasm.

“Never said that,” I replied curtly before I reacted in a way I couldn’t take back.

"Good because being in charge doesn’t absolve me of following rules. I don’t ask shit of anyone I'm not willing to do myself- your ass included. That is what makes me a leader; if you’re going to take over one day, you need to understand that. You should've been more careful if you didn’t want to marry her. Welcome to the real world, Gi."

I was free to fuck whomever I wanted, and when the time came, I’d pick who would bear my children. I did pick Hailo; it wasn’t with marriage in mind. I didn’t have much in mind that night outside of seeing her smile. The sex was just the cherry on top.
