"Hey, Gianni. What can I do for you?"

"I need that five million that never made it to Dr. Taylor sent over now."

"Is Saul not in his office?"

"It's your job now, so I need to know you can handle these tasks. Can you do that?"

"Umm, sure." Jackie smoothed her dress and took a seat behind her desk. Making my way behind her, I watched her go into the account and remove the money Saul thought he had hidden and make the deposit to Dr. Taylor, who was in charge of the department of education in DuPont Falls.

"Thank you, sweetheart. There's a big mess in Saul's office. Somebody's on their way to take care of it."

"Is everything okay?"

"It will. You're running shit now. If you don't want to end up like Saul, don't play with my money," I warned, heading out of her office.

Dr. Kimberly Taylor was one of the sweetest people I'd ever met. She worked hard to transform education in DuPont Falls but that required money. Thanks to Saul, she hadn't been able to, so I headed to Christian Academy to formally apologize and drop off lunch for her and the staff.

"Gianni! What are you doing here?" Dr. Taylor greeted me with a hug.

"This is for you and the staff. My family sends our apologies for the delay in funds."

"Thank you."

"You're welcome."

"Mr. Meraux, can you stay and play with us?" Ally asked. She was the last person who needed to be playing since she was tagging along with Dr. Taylor. That meant she was in class doing something she wasn't supposed to do again and got kicked out. I had lunch with her a few times when I dropped by, and now she always wanted me to hang out.

"He can't. Mr. Meraux is a very busy man." The familiar voice spoke up.

That thing that only Kyerra Taylor could bring out of me happened. She was blissfully happy to see me, which she tried to hide, but I could always read Kyerra like my favorite book.

"Come on, Ally. Let me get you back to class. Thank you again, Gianni."

"You're welcome," I replied, sliding my hands into my pockets.

Dr. Taylor ushered Ally out of her office, leaving Kyerra and me alone to bask in the awkward energy floating between us. She looked as good as when she broke up with me and left for Hammond Hills.

"I didn't know you were back."

"Of course, you didn't. You don't talk to me much anymore. What, your girlfriend made you put a stop to that?"

I chuckled and brushed my thumb across my nose at Kyerra's attempt to pry into my personal life.

"I don't have a girlfriend, but I'm sure you asked Solana about that already."

"Nobody's checking for you, Gianni."

"Fuck nobody. I'm talking about you." Kyerra swallowed hard, trying to drum up an answer outside of the obvious one.

"No, I'm not."

"Ouch!" My hand hit my chest as she flipped her eyes at my antics.

"Oh please, you're not checking for me either. I'm sure plenty of women are keeping you warm in my absence."

There had, but I was a single nigga. Kyerra made her decision, and I had to live with it. I couldn't spend my days crying about her lack of faith in us.

"Besides, I needed time to focus on myself and my career.”
