“Bye, Mack!” Cam threw her hand up and took off running down the hallway.

Skylar excused herself and put some food on a plate for Cam. After a brief conversation, she delivered her food and returned, plopping down on the couch next to me.

“Now, what were you saying about me not needing to bring Cam food?”

“You’re so annoying. I’m sorry about that.”

“It’s cool. I know you’re a mother.”

“Yeah, I am.”

“You sure you don’t want to talk about why?”

“Talking about it won’t change anything.”

“Maybe not, but holding that shit in won’t either.”

Sky took in a deep breath, surprised that I pressed the issue. Likely because her stomach was in knots deciding how much to share with me.

“It’s not just one thing. Cam’s dad was supposed to pick her up today and didn’t. I was looking forward to a break,” she admitted, and the relief was short-lived as she tried to clean up her statement, “I mean, I love my baby, but I never get a moment to myself. It’s always something to do being a mother. He gets to pick and choose when he wants to be a father. It’s not fair, but that’s my fault. I should’ve chosen a better father for her.”

“You have enough shit on your plate. Don’t take on his too.”

“Why are you always so nice to me?” she asked.

“What do I do that’s so nice?” I asked out of curiosity because I wasn’t doing shit but being me.

“You gave me a lot of money for no reason. Now you’re here delivering food because I had a shitty day.”

“I’m just me. I don’t know any other way to be.”

“The world could use more of that.”

“What about you?” I asked, swiping at her chin. I had been fighting the urge to touch her but was currently losing. “What could Skylar use more of?”

“Rest,” she spat out as if she had been waiting for someone to ask. “And quiet time. Cam asks more questions than I have answers some days.”

“What else?” I asked, leaning in a fraction. There was still a small distance between us, but Skylar’s breathing increased.

“To not have to be strong and figure everything out,” she admitted.

“When you’re ready to receive all that.” I leaned in an inch, and Skylar didn’t shy away. Skylar buried her face into mine, and I had to stop myself because the taste of her lips was addictive. “Let me know,” I smirked, swiping the remnants of our kiss from the corner of her mouth. “Wassup with Cam’s daddy, though?”

Draping my arm around her shoulders, Skylar pulled her legs in and rested her head against my chest.

She cleared her throat, pretending not to be affected by our kiss, “According to Marcus, I’m the problem. I make it hard for him to be a father because we’re always arguing. We wouldn’t have anything to argue about if he were a better father, but he can’t see that part.”

My head fell back as her voice almost lulled me to sleep. Skylar was comfortable as she rambled about her sister, Tamia, another stressor in her life. She needed to get it off her chest, so I let her, even if I only heard bits and pieces of the conversation.

“Enough about my problems. Are you excited about your birthday?”

“Excited to see you,” I smirked. My eyes were still closed, but I envisioned Skylar rolling her eyes as she blushed at my statement.

“I see why you’re so quiet now. You can’t talk without flirting.”

“I can. I choose not to around you. Remember that.” My lips brushed her forehead as she nestled in closer to my side.

Being close to Skylar was so relaxing that it turned my mind to mush, but I liked it and couldn’t see myself anywhere else.
