Hailo’s eyes roamed the room, likely because she knew more than she let on, but I already knew that.

“I think he loves her. She loves him, too, and not getting him back in one piece will push her to a place of no return. I know you don’t want that.”

“Fuck.”

“So, what’s the plan?” Hailo repeated.

“Take Solana to my parents’ house. I’ll meet y’all there.”

“When this shit is said and done, you owe me a vacation,” Hailo complained.

“I know what you need. Just handle that for me, please.”

“Don’t I always?” Hailo rolled her eyes.

“You do, and I love you for it.”

“I love you too.”

Quickly getting dressed, I grabbed my keys and jogged out the door. I didn’t have any expectations, but I did have a few questions for Quest. During the drive to the farm, I had Daniel search for a marriage certificate to corroborate Solana’s story. She had no reason to lie, but it was clear she was desperate, and desperate people would say whatever to get their way.

“Were you able to find anything?” I asked, answering Daniel’s call as I pulled into the driveway.

“January 1st, Solana Meraux became Mrs. Quest Cassidy. I sent a copy of the marriage certificate to your email.”

“Thanks, Daniel.”

“You’re welcome.”

Disconnecting the call, I momentarily mulled over the information before climbing out of the car and going inside.

“Wassup Gi, I didn’t know you were coming through today,” Munch said as I rounded the corner.

“Me either. How has he been?”

“Easiest money I’ve ever made. He hasn’t budged,” Munch replied.

“Is he alive?” I asked because that wasn’t the report I was expecting.

“Yeah, he’s just chilling.”

“Thanks.”

As soon as I opened the door, Quest lifted his head, and I tossed the food bag on his lap.

“What the fuck is this?”

“She said you needed to eat.”

Quest didn’t reply. He just stared with coldness, assessing me when he finally asked, “How is she?”

“Attitude out of this world, but she’s fine.” He chuckled as if the update created happy memories. “I’m going to untie you. Don’t be stupid. I don’t wanna kill my cousin’s husband, but I will.” His mouth twisted wryly at the threat while figuring out how I knew.

Pulling my keys from my pocket, I cut the tape, freeing Quest's hands. Initially, He was hesitant to accept the burger and fries, but he did. I allowed him a few bites before I began questioning the validity of their marriage.

“You’ve always been a straight shooter with me, Quest. So, what the fuck is going on with you and Solana.”

“What’s going on with you and your wife?” He asked. The same way he had done the night, we grabbed him. I chalked it up to him, trying to get under my skin at the moment, but now it made sense.
