“Cam has been calling him. She thought he was ignoring her, but I guess not.” That was all I could muster up, and that was all that mattered to me.

“Can you ask Mack to look into it? He has reach, and whoever did this needs to pay for it.”

“I’m sorry this happened to you, but this isn’t my fight.”

Her brows furrowed, confused as to why I wasn’t eager to join her quest for justice. She had no clue the hell I endured or that he was even extorting me for money. I didn’t have any tears or energy left for Marcus and his shit.

“He’s the father of your child. The doctors don’t know if he’ll ever wake up! How are you okay with that?”

“We share a child, and if we’re being honest, we barely do that. It’s your job to stand by his side. Not mine.”

“Wow, I guess this is the side of you Marcus kept telling me about. I didn’t want to believe it because you were always nice, but now I see it.”

Clasping my hands together, I carefully picked my words, “Ember, I’m trying because I know how manipulative Marcus can be. He’s your man, so I understand why you’re heartbroken, but don’t condemn me for not feeling the same.”

Ember scoffed, rolling her eyes. “He tried to be a father! You blocked him at every turn, but I guess you needed that to make yourself the victim. What are you going to tell Cam about her dad?”

“I should tell her he’s been extorting me for money to impress you. Marcus didn’t give a fuck about Cam until he met you. He saw how much you loved your child and used his own to make you believe he’s a good man. Believe me, he’s not worth the tears you’re crying. Have a good day, Ember.”

I wasn’t about to argue with this woman, so I started down the hallway.

“Did Mack do this?” She blurted out, forcing me to turn around. “Or was it you? Is that why you’re so reluctant to help?”

“I’d be real fuckin’ careful about the accusations you throw out because if,” I leaned in so only Ember could hear what was coming next, “and it’s a big if we did have anything to do with it, what the fuck do you think we could do to you?” Ember’s features contorted with shock and anger as I continued. “But because I’ve been where you are torn between the truth and the dream he sold you, I’ll tell you we had nothing to do with whatever happened. Good luck.” Spinning on my heels, I exited the hospital and texted Mack.

I couldn’t in good conscience say Mack wasn’t, but I would never tell Ember that. He was at the office, but my nerves wouldn’t allow me to wait until he got home, so I told him I was on my way.

When I reached his assistant's desk, she ushered me inside, where Mack and Gianni were in the middle of something.

“Wassup Sky,” Gi greeted me, the way he always did, even going back to my days behind the bar. He had always been the gentleman his parents raised him to be.

“Hey Gi, can we have a moment, please?” I asked, setting my purse on Mack’s desk.

“Hit me later,” He smirked, collecting his stuff to return to his office.

Once the door shut, Mack was eager to find out what brought me to his office with such conflicted energy.

“What’s wrong?”

“I don’t care if you did or didn’t. I just want the truth. Did you have something to do with Marcus getting hit by a truck?”

Somehow, my words relaxed Mack. I don’t know what he was expecting, but that wasn’t it when he pushed his chair from his desk.

“Whatever happened to Marcus doesn’t have shit to do with me, and I’m not sorry about it either.”

Mack patted his lap, and I complied, sinking into him like the teddy bear he was.

“That’s good enough for me, but it won’t be for Ember. She accused us of being behind it because I wasn’t broken down crying.”

“Hurt people hurt people. I’m not trippin’ off that shit. How was your test?” he asked.

“I won’t know officially until later this week, but I think I killed it.”

“Of course you did.” Mack kissed my forehead. “Now, I’m one step closer to retirement.”

“The way you believe in me is so cute, but hold your horses, sir.”

“Are you good?”
