“That’s what I said,” Morgan muttered.

“I don’t know why I didn’t, but that’s not it. I’ve never been more certain of anything in my life.”

Mom sat on the arm of the chair, trying to wrap her mind around me being married to Solana Meraux.

“Is there something we’re missing?”

“No, it’s not, and it’s my last time talking about this. So, if y’all are done, I need to get home because I have a date with my wife later.”

That title floated around the room like a thick cloud. Each of my family wearing their feelings on the subject. I would’ve liked their support, but it wasn’t a requirement for me. When nobody spoke up, I stood and kissed my mother, leaving them to discuss my choices amongst themselves.

“Yo, Quest!” Morgan yelled, jogging down the porch steps to catch up. “Why the hell didn’t you tell me?”

“It wouldn’t have changed shit.”

“It would’ve at least made sense why you were going so hard.”

“I appreciate it, bro, but I’m not looking for anyone to understand. Just respect my shit.” Morgan didn’t want to, but he extended his hand and dapped me up. “Considering it was her who got me out of there, I thought she’d be your favorite person.”

“You asked for respect. Don’t push it.”

“I’ll hit you later.”

“Congratulations nigga.” Morgan and I slapped hands again, and I climbed into the car.

I didn’t expect to be back on the road so soon, but I used the time to make sure all my plans were set for tonight. Solana had waited a long time for this moment, and I wanted everything to be special. The journey home felt like a bridge between two worlds – the comforting embrace of childhood memories and the promise of an intimate evening with Solana. As I navigated the familiar streets, my thoughts drifted toward the evening ahead, imagining the smiles, laughter, and shared moments awaiting us on this date night.

“How do I look?” Solana asked, nervously running her hands down the black leather dress.

“How do you look?” I snaked my arms around her waist, causing her to giggle. “You look like I might change my mind and shoot for that baby tonight.”

“How about we revisit that in six months to a year.”

“Aite, I guess I can do that, Mrs. Cassidy.”

“Solana Cassidy does sound nice.”

“Come on, let me feed you.”

Solana asked where we were going the entire ride, but I couldn’t answer that question if I wanted to. My homegirl, Alex, handled everything, but I prayed she came through. Instead of telling Solana the truth, I replied, ‘It’s a surprise’. Pulling my arm around her and resting her head against my chest, she enjoyed the ride.

Arriving at a secluded beach location, there was a romantic dinner for two with a pianist and everything. I didn’t know what he was playing, but it sounded romantic. The moonlight danced on the water, casting a magical ambiance over our secluded corner. The air was filled with the fragrance of the sea and the delectable aroma of our sumptuous meal being cooked by the private chef.

“Oh my God!” Solana smiled and threw her arms around me. “It’s so beautiful.”

I don’t know what she was expecting, but this wasn’t it, and part of me was offended. We still had a lot to learn coming out of the shadows and being together full-time, but she should’ve known I’d do anything for her.

A red carpet led to the tent, where a table for two was set up with roses and candles for décor.

“Come on, let’s go.” Taking off her high heels, we walked to the table, where I pulled out Solana’s chair.

“Who helped you with this?”

“How do you figure someone helped me?” I challenged curious about what gave it away.

“I know my husband. You have a lot of strengths, but this isn’t it,” Solana giggled.

“Oh yeah, tell me about your husband’s strengths.” I took a sip of champagne, putting her on the spot.
