Quest didn’t immediately reply. He paused, looking me over before pushing his chair back and standing up.

“If you were mine, you wouldn’t be in a casino alone on a Friday night. We would’ve grabbed dinner at one of those fancy-ass restaurants you like. After that, we’d hit a karaoke spot so I could watch you sing love songs about me off-key. At first you act shy though, because you sound terrible. You know it too but you’re so cute that doesn’t even matter. Then we’d end the night getting ice cream since you were such a good sport.” Quest rattled off, and I found myself intrigued by his fictional date.

“Luckily, I have time, so tell me what you wanna do,” Quest offered, and I damn near came in my panties when he licked his lips. I don’t know if it was the drinks I consumed, but Quest had me thinking about things I had no business considering.

We ended up ordering food and spending the rest of the night at a booth in the corner, talking about everything and nothing. Quest walked me to my car at the night's end and asked for my number.

Initially, I was hesitant, but over time, Quest proved himself. Now, I was knee-deep in a situation I had no clue how to get out of. Grabbing my belongings, I quickly went inside to join the rest of the girls.

“Nice of you to finally join us,” Kyerra complained because I had left her alone with Hailo. They were cordial, but the tension was still prevalent, and Kyerra felt it at every gathering.

“Sorry, I got caught up,” I whispered, easing into the booth next to her.

Hailo was discussing tasks that needed to be completed before going around the table to update us on our assigned tasks when my phone buzzed.

Q: I’m sorry I tripped on you.

Rolling my eyes, I exited our thread, and after a few moments, my phone buzzed again.

Q: Don’t make me take that shit back, Solana.

Me: Tell it to your Valentine.

Q: Why you think I texted you?

Me: Can’t be me, especially since I saw Bella heading to your office on my way out.

Q: Don’t create a problem when it’s not one.

Me: Cool, I’ll have my ex drop by and see me later.

Q: Stop playing with me before I cancel those ugly blue cabinets.

I could feel his intense gaze through the phone. Quest possessed all the qualities girls dreamed of in a man, including protection. He was secure in what he brought to the table but made it clear early on he wasn’t into sharing.

Q: Call your forever Valentine later.

Me: You’re not cute.

Q: That smile on your face says I am.

Me: I’m not smiling.

Q: Have a good day, Princess.

I hated how Quest could make me smile even when I didn’t want to. Hailo said that’s what love does to you.

“Earth to Solana!” Hailo said, waving her arms in the air to get my attention.

“Huh?”

“You’ve been weird lately? You dropped out of our New Year’s trip. You never answer the phone, but it’s glued to your hand every time we see you,” Hailo fussed.

“Leave her alone, Lo,” Sky interjected on my behalf because she was the only person who knew why I really dropped out.

“I’m fine. What were you saying again?”

“Is there an update on the costumes for the parade?”
