“Yes. Everything should be here by the end of the week.”
“Okay, good,” Hailo breathed a sigh of relief, moving on to the next topic while I zoned out, pretending I was anywhere but here.
Chapter Four
Hailo: Did you find something to wear?
Me: I don’t feel like going out, Lo.
Hailo: Too bad. Your man already gave me the green light.
Ihad to find something to wear because Hailo wasn’t letting up. I thought she would be less worried about me showing up with Niyomi and Denim in town, but I was wrong.
Hailo: Do you need help finding an outfit?
Me: No, I’ll find something.
Now that I had another task on my to-do list, I called my mother-in-law so I could go shopping when I left the library.
“Hey, baby,” Mom answered my call with the warm tone she always did.
“Hey, are you busy today?”
“Not really. Just going out to run some errands later.”
“It’s fine, never mind.”
“You need me to pick up Cam?” Mom asked, reading my mind.
My lips pressed thin because asking for help was still hard.
“If it’s not too much trouble.” I fought the urge to rattle off that I didn’t want to bother Mack because I knew he had a lot to do today.
“I will get her Skylar.”
“Thank you so much,” I replied.
“It’s no problem. I love hanging out with my girl.”
“I really appreciate you.”
“I appreciate you sharing her with me. Anyway, take as much time as you need.”
“Thanks.”
Hanging up, I should’ve been focusing on the biology of lactation, but instead, I found myself daydreaming about how much further in life I would be if I had a mother like Mia. Money and privilege aside, she possessed all the qualities a mother should have: loving, empathetic, supportive, and patient. The list could go on because Mia was everything Adria wasn’t.
My phone buzzed again, and I knew it was Hailo with more demands, but it was much worse.
Marcus: We need to talk.
Me: About what?
Marcus: Cam.
Me: What about her?
He didn’t reply. Instead, Marcus was calling my phone. A sure sign he was about to piss me off because he never called.
