“Pussy really is power. Ember’s has to be immaculate to make you want to be a father.”

“Pussy is very powerful. You, of all people, should know that. Time is ticking. We need to book soon, so let me know if I need to holla at Mack.”

“You do know all my secrets, so I’d be careful if I were you,” I warned, pushing away from the table because Mack’s voice was becoming more challenging to hear.

I rushed out of the café and climbed into the car because I refused to let Marcus see me cry. As I drove home, all the decisions I wished I could take back were at the forefront of my brain- including the night I agreed to let Marcus take me out.

Home was where I was usually the most comfortable. It was my safe haven when life got too hectic, but it felt like a prison as I unlocked the door and trudged upstairs. I desperately needed a hot shower to release the tension in my body.

I removed my earrings and stared at the ring Mack put on my finger and his words when he gave it to me. The look on his face waiting for my response. It was the happiest moment of my life, but looking at it now felt different.

My phone buzzed against the granite, causing me to jump before reading my sister’s name. I wasn’t in the headspace for whatever conversation Tamia wanted—especially listening to Mack’s footsteps near the bathroom.

“I wasn’t expecting you home so soon.” Mack snuck up and wrapped me in his arms.

“Why?”

“Mom told me she was picking up Cam.”

“Oh.” My shoulders relaxed at his response. “I was, but I just came home after the library,” I lied.

“My ‘lil brainiac had a long day.” Mack turned me around, forcing me to look at the love in his eyes.

“Very.”

“Do you want to go out for dinner since Cam is with Mom?” He was so busy kissing my neck that he didn’t see the distress on my face, and I was thankful for that.

“Can we pick up?”

“Whatever you want.” With a smack on the ass, Mack left me alone in the bathroom to pull myself together. I wasn’t sure how, but I needed to figure out my next move because allowing Marcus to take Cam out of the country wasn’t an option.

Chapter Five

Now that I was in DuPont Falls full-time, I needed a place to call home. My apartment was cool temporarily, but I needed more space. Unfortunately, the contractors were already behind schedule. I was a fair man, but time was money at the end of the day, and they were wasting both.

“Wassup Mo,” I answered, thankful that he returned my call promptly. He was always into something, so I needed to pull up on him and look him in the eyes.

“Ain’t shit, just left some bitch house.”

Shaking my head, I opened the car door and slipped inside. “What’s wrong with you? I know that woman has a name.”

“That ain’t my problem. What are you doing up this early? Leaving Bella’s crib?” He asked, offering an answer to his question.

“That’s not my headache anymore. Where are you headed? We need to talk. Today,” I emphasized.

“To the crib. I need to shower and handle some shit.”

“I got a few stops to make, and then I’m on my way. Stay put.”

“Nigga stop talking to me like I’m two. I’ll be there.”

Sometimes, he acted two, but I couldn’t argue that point right now. I had other shit to do.

“Good. I’ll let you know when I’m on the way.”

I was hoping the shortage was a misunderstanding as opposed to some ill-thought-out get-back for some shit Mo shouldn’t have done anyway. That was Morgan. Impulsive and rarely thinking things through, then the rest of us had to clean up his shit.

When we were younger, the action was entertaining. Now that I was older and wiser, I just wanted to enjoy life and get this paper. I’d handle shit as it came, but I wasn’t out seeking a thrill by making bonehead decisions. Arriving at the site, I pulled into my driveway, annoyed at the lack of progress.
