“Sky, you’re starting to scare me. Seriously, what is going on?”

“I know Mack loves me. He loves me so much and Cam even more.”

“As he should. You’re amazing, and he knows that.”

“Depends on who you ask.”

This was the first time I had seen Sky like this. She was usually the one holding us together. The calm you needed during a storm, but Sky couldn’t even be that for herself right now and it could only mean one thing.

“It’s Marcus, isn’t it?”

I wasn’t sure, but the way she turned to me, asking, “What?” I figured I was right, or at least in the ballpark.

“He’s the only man who can get between you and Mack.” I hated Marcus for both Cam and Sky. He was an opportunist if I had ever seen one making Sky’s life hard every chance he got.

“It’s not like that. I don’t want Marcus.” I knew that, but I let Sky lead instead of pointing it out. “Were there things you were initially scared to share with Gianni?”

“Gianni was a stranger. Of course, there were things I was hesitant to share.”

“What changed your mind?”

“We had to be honest with ourselves and each other. Then we had to do the work.” Sky didn’t have a mother to lean on, so I decided to share some encouragement that mine gave me. “A wise woman once told me fear is normal. You don’t have to have all the answers. God made partners so we wouldn’t have to do everything alone, so stop trying.” I smiled, nudging her shoulder with my own.

“Thanks, Lo, and tell my girl Sadie thank you too.”

“Don’t doubt Mack. He’d move heaven and earth for you, so Marcus is light work.”

“Alright, enough of this! Where’s the liquor?” Sky jumped to her feet and headed for the bar.

“Two shots mandatory!” I demanded.

“Are you trying to get me drunk?”

“Absolutely, so you can go home and make shit right with your man.”

“Tomorrow. Tonight is girls’ night,” Sky maintained.

“I’m holding you to that.”

“Oh, I know,” Sky replied before chugging her first shot.

Solana arrived next and wasted no time catching up while Denim and Niyomi walked in, arguing as usual. Denim was taking her sweet time getting ready, leaving Niyomi irritated because Prompt Patty was dressed and ready to start the party.

Sky, being the mediator that she was, made them both take shots and hug it out. I was just happy to have all my girls in one place.

Chapter Eight

Niyomi and Denim were fascinated with DuPont Falls. Every visit, they never wanted the night to end, and this one was no different. The club dried up, so we walked into the casino instead of returning to the hotel.

“Is it some fine nigga’s in here?” Denim asked.

“Is that all you care about?” I chuckled as she reapplied her lipstick.

“Girl, it’s a struggle for the average woman out here. Shit, I’m trying to snag my husband so I can be living like Lo and Sky.”

“Here you go,” Hailo sucked her teeth.

“Don’t be out here fronting on my brother’s name. Did he, or did he not change your life?” Denim asked, placing her hand behind her ear, awaiting Hailo’s response.
