“That’s important. We need to know.”

“She wouldn’t tell me, and neither would Lo. So, for now, when I call, Sol answers. If she doesn’t, then I turn shit upside down to find her and her nigga. All that yelling and shit is why she doesn’t tell you anything,” Gi fussed while my eyes bounced between the two of them.

Tyson could be a wild card. It didn’t help that Gi was telling him about his own sister. Shockingly, Tyson didn’t erupt despite his chest heaving like he wanted to.

“I hate to break it to you, but Sol is grown. Everybody has their own family, and she wants something for herself, too. Newsflash. This isn’t her first boyfriend,” Gi explained.

“I need a fuckin’ drink,” Tyson announced.

“Bitch ass nigga look like he’s going to be sick,” Gi added, causing me to look up. Sure enough, Tyson was stressed.

“Getting married and having kids has made you soft,” Tyson complained, but Gi hunched his shoulders because he wasn’t in denial. Nor did he care enough to change it.

“I’m hungry,” I announced.

“Aye nigga don’t be eating all my kid’s snacks either,” Gi yelled out, but I flipped him the bird and headed for the kitchen.

Lo always kept snacks in the crib, so my first stop was the pantry. It was packed with so much stuff I didn’t know what to grab first. Then I heard footsteps that caused me to peep my head out. I expected Gi or even Tyson because he needed something to take his mind off Solana having a boyfriend. Instead, it was Lo, her gaze drilling into me.

“Wassup Lo.” She didn’t respond. Instead, she delivered a dramatic expression while pointing at herself. “What’s all that for?”

“I’m afraid to speak to you. Last time, you bit my head off.”

“I deserve that. My bad.”

“It’s that bad, huh?” She asked, easing onto the barstool.

“Usually, I know how to handle Sky. What she needs. What she doesn’t need. Right now, I have nothing. She keeps saying she’s fine, but I know my heart. She isn’t fine and won’t let me fix it.”

“Maybe it’s not for you to fix.”

Hailo’s statement made me chortle. Men and women were wired differently, so I didn’t expect her to agree, but I explained anyway.

“I’m her man. It’s always my job to fix it.”

Hailo dramatically lapped her eyes, likely because Gianni had told her something similar.

“That’s what’s wrong with y’all,” she replied, waving her index finger. “You Merauxs think you can fix everything. Even if you are her man, every problem isn’t yours to solve.”

“It is when she’s scared. Fear is the only thing that makes her act like this. Managing her fears is my job. How come she doesn’t know that?”

“She knows, but sometimes fear plays games and makes you think things you know aren’t true like she’s in it alone when she has you.”

“It’s not enough room in this relationship for me and her fears.”

“So, what are you going to do?” Hailo questioned.

“Shit, I’m waiting on you to tell me.”

Her lips quirked before she shook her head. “Put your foot down. Back Sky in a corner and make her choose between whatever is going on or telling you the truth.”

“Selling your girl out like that? I’m shocked.”

“I’m not selling her out. Just helping her get what she really wants, and that’s you.”

“You better fuckin’ hope so, or you’ll be one friend short.”

Hailo waved me off, walking to the refrigerator. “For what it’s worth, I don’t know what’s going on any more than you do.”
