“Let me guess. Gianni put you up to that?”

“Nobody put me up to anything. You two make the perfect babies. Of course, I want another one.”

“Then you better have it because I am done,” I asserted.

“Can’t blame a grandma for trying. Isn’t that right, Ren?” Mom asked, pinching her cheek.

“Anyway. I have to get going. I’ll be back soon.”

“On time, Hailo!” Mom yelled out behind me.

“Yes, ma’am.”

I climbed into the car and drove to the office to meet the girls. Solana confirmed she was on the way, and I was grateful. I wasn’t sure how Gianni knew but he did. After today, she was officially on her own with this shit.

I was the last to arrive, walking into the stale room. Everybody seemed preoccupied and not in a good way. Solana was quiet. Sky looked like she hadn’t slept in days, and even Kyerra looked lost in thought.

“Did somebody die?” I asked. They all responded in various ‘huhs’ and confused expressions because they didn’t see themselves the way I could right now. “What the hell is going on?”

“Nothing,” Solana and Sky replied, while Kyerra said nothing. That much was typical for her, unlike the weary expression she wore.

“Something. Everybody looks like their dog got hit by a car,” I replied, shifting to Kyerra. “Including you, and none of y’all have a fuckin’ dog.”

“I’m fine.” Solana proclaimed.

“Not for long. You need to call Gianni or else.”

“Or else what?” Solana felt threatened and sat up in her seat.

“You want me to say it in front of everybody?”

“We all know Solana has a boyfriend,” Kyerra mumbled.

Solana didn’t reply. She just curled her top lip and rolled her eyes.

“Call him or else. Those are his words, and I don’t think he’s playing.”

“I will,” Solana sighed, relaxing in her seat.

“What’s wrong with the rest of y’all?” I asked, rolling my neck back and forth between Kyerra and Sky.

“I’m just tired, Lo. Can we get on with this?” Sky asked.

Taking my seat, I opened my notebook and went down the checklist. Honestly, there wasn’t much left, and the silence finally caused me to close my notebook. My warning had sucked the life out of Solana, and now she was stressed, likely thinking about what Gianni wanted.

“Alright. We’re going for drinks,” I announced.

“She’s talking to y’all,” Kyerra replied with a chuckle.

“I’m talking to you too. You look just as pitiful as them. Even I feel bad,” I rolled my eyes.

“I have to study, and it’s not even noon yet. Where the hell are we going drinking?” Sky asked because she was always in ‘mom mode.’

“Let me handle that. Everybody up,” I snapped my fingers, looking directly at Kyerra.

She wasn’t feeling my tone, but I was right, which was the only reason she got up. I hoped I didn’t regret making the first move, but they were draining me just looking at them.

Happy Hour did precisely what I intended. Everyone left a lot happier than they were when we arrived—everybody but me, because the more I listened to Sky spill her feelings, the more confused I became.
